Hi
I currently have one ATI radeon HD 4870, I planned on getting another one around the time I bought it 18 months ago but never got round to it (more like didn't have the cash!). But now I'm considering this again. what I'd like to know is if it is worth crossfiring, or would I be better off just getting a new GPU altogether; can I crossfire with newer cards? is it worth it, i.e. would dolphin run wii games faster if I crossfire or even upgrade...
Any thoughts?

Thanks

Dolphin would not benefit from the GPU upgrade, Dolphin mostly relies on your processor.
I'm running an HD4850 in my system and it's perfect for it, since I chose to upgrade the processor it's been doing better.

  • Dolphin will not see the benefit from any GFX card upgrade.
  • In order to be able to Crossfire with a different generation, you must make sure your motherboard supports CrossFireX
  • Unless you intend to run the latest games on HD resolutions, you won't see any benefit from Crossfire
  • As of 9.12 drivers, you can update and/or modify your CrossFire profiles making crossfire not much driver dependant now.
  • Can your PSU handle the power consumption? In any case you can always sell the 4870 and buy a 5870
  • Crossfire requires both GFX card to have big amounts of memory to be effective, does your 4870 have 1GB?

The choice is yours.

Yep , CPU is Dolphin Food !

But , If you want to upgrade your PC (not "dolphinly" related) , you can ADD another 4870 OR a 4890 OR even a 4870X2 .
