Is it possible to make a better 4:3 hack for Skyward Sword? I have a preliminary code that works to some degree, but it's very imperfect. I have tested it on Dolphin before, but it seems to work better on a real Wii, as my recent testing hasn't worked well in Dolphin.

Code:
Skyward Sword 4:3 Hack
04576880 3f400000
e0000000 80008000

Unfortunately, it breaks the water effect visible near the lake in Skyloft and possibly other effects. The cutscenes and talking with characters force the game into a weird not-quite-4:3 aspect ratio that feels claustrophobic. Actually, the whole game feels claustrophobic, and I think that it's because the FOV is too low for a 4:3 aspect ratio. Another thing is that the aiming reticule seems to be off-center. The GUI is mostly off-screen too. The game is still playable, but it's not as easy. Lastly, the two FMVs (the opening "legend" and the end credits) are presented in the wrong aspect ratio.

Thank you very much.

Widescreen seems to be broken at the moment for a lot of games. The commit merge request is still sitting in the backlog unfortunately.

To be more specific, widescreen isn't broken, widescreen auto-detection is. While annoying, it does work correctly if you manually force the aspect ratio you want in the graphics settings.

Oh, that's good to hear. I thought forcing 16:9 would break the widescreen codes or look weird.

No. That can happen if you enable the widescreen hack, but not if you just change the aspect ratio setting.

I have one that scales the screen fov and corrects the UI because it contains a boolean check that adjusts the scale if it's not widescreen mode after the first check for the viewport and some interface elements like the cursor:

16:9 code for Spider-Man 2 (USA):

Code:
$16:9 Widescreen
044795A4 3FE38E39

This is basically the same as the widescreen hack but prevents culling on-screen. It also has the side effect of making the minimap slightly larger.

You'll need to force Dolphin to use 16:9 with the game with this code, otherwise it flickers back and forth between 4:3 and 16:9.
