Kubuntu 16.04 x86_64

Intel i3-4130 @3.4 GHz (Hyperthreading disabled)
2x2GB DDR3-1600
Nvidia GT 710 (no gaming yet)

Is this result good enough to spend some money on a new gfx card (GTX 1050ti) to play Mario Kart DD, and the Zelda games @1080p?

2xIR (720p) at best . GT 730 is barely faster than your Intel HD 4600 (i3 4130)
http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GeForce-GT-730-vs-Intel-HD-4600-Desktop-125-GHz/m12582vs2168
GT 710 is even slower than GT 730 . So it's probably worse than Intel HD 4600
GTX 750ti is good enough for 4xIR (2560x2112) , GTX 1050 and GTX 1050ti are way faster than that
Edit : Nevermind , I thought you would ask if your GT 710 was good enough for 1080p . Sure, your i3 won't bottleneck the GT 1050ti .

I've never used the iGPU because I prefer the nvidia drivers on Linux.
At the moment the GT 710 is only for Kodi and Live-TV (Nvidia VDPAU decoding, deinterlacing & scaling).

A GTX 1050ti is 50% more powerful than a 750ti and has twice the VRAM, is "only" 40% more expensive and has better/more modern video decoding capabilities and interfaces (HDMI 2.0b, DP 1.4).

So with a GTX 1050ti I would only be able to set the IR higher compared to a GTX 750ti fe.

Using a 1080p screen, would the image quality benefit from the higher IR?
Can the CPU (my i3) keep up at these high IR rates?

Yes , the image will be downscaled to 1080p automatically . As as results , it will look sharper and better
If your internal resolution is high enough , you may not need anti-aliasing
Your CPU will probably run 95% games at full speed , you may have some slowdowns with demanding game like The Last Story though

That sounds great - thx.

I think, as long as Zelda Collectors Edition (OOT & MM), Wind Waker and Twilight Princess and Mario Kart DD runs smooth I will be satisfied.

Making sure there's no confusion here

Setting the IR higher than your display resolution will not look better. Dolphin does not implement a downsampling filter.

If you want downsampling, pick the IR closest to your display's resolution and select SSAA in the anti-aliasing options. One of these days we'll implement a downsampling filter so users doing this isn't a bad idea.

Uh , what ? I can clearly tell the difference . I rather trust what i can see
Here : 4xIR vs Auto (1080p)
4xIR (on the left) has less jaggies than Auto

That's because while we discard most of the image, *some* improvement is there when you do that. But it is horribly inefficient for the visual quality improvements over just SSAA.

I will say it again. We do not have a downsampling filter in Dolphin.

I don't use higher IR for the jaggies, but in certain games (Pokemon XD and Coliseum), the textures on models look better at higher resolutions.
