Ah, so if I change game ini files, they will be saved in the Dolphin global configuration folder?

If you edit a game .ini in dolphin it will create a new separate .ini, that it will use to override the old one, in the user folder

I don't think that's true. When I edit a .ini file in Dolphin, the settings are savedin the global folder; located in document/dolphin emulator/gamesettings. They are NOT saved in the local folder.

I think this was the case with older versions of Dolphin though (prior to 4.0).

I use a fully configured emulator frontend (Maximus Arcade) to play every console & arcade game instantly

@xystus: From what I understood it's exactly the opposite: When you edit an ini file, that one will go to the user folder in ...documents\Dolphin Emulator\GameSettings

I think we mean the same thing Smile When I edit a game through Dolphin, the ini file is located in ...documents\Dolphin Emulator\GameSettings. Only when using "portable.txt" it saves the ini's in the local folder.

It will always go in the user folder, which is typically in documents/dolphin emulator but can be anywhere.

I'm fairly new to this, but do I need to specify all settings in the .ini file, or can I just change (and therefore include in the ini file) certain settings, while leaving the rest on default?

I've tried it that way and, as far as I know, it generally works, but when I change the aspect ratio via .ini file, Dolphin crashes as soon as I try to boot up the game.
I haven't tried a huge amount of other settings though. (I know for sure, graphics backend and widescreen hack don't make the program crash)

I can't replicate the aspect ratio crash, it works fine here. Copy paste it from the first page to not make mistakes and try again, something like:
[Video_Settings]
AspectRatio = 1

Okay, I really am not sure, what could be the cause of this. Because now I believe to have found out, that it concerns only certain games. For me it happens with Paper Mario and Alien Hominid (both games that use a lot of 2D graphics). And with these games it only happens with OpenGL video backend. Actually I believe now, that I was wrong about the aspect ratio thing and that it rather has something to do with the backend.
I tried other games (Mario Party 4, PSO, Skies of Arcadia), no problems there.

[Core]
GFXBackend = OGL
[Video_Settings]
AspectRatio = 2

This is what I used for Paper Mario, btw. The same lines work with other games, so it can't be because of typos, I guess.
