85C or higher temps will damage your chip and mobo
90C or higher temps , your laptop is in critical condition
100-105C your chip will melt down

Quote:and it's surely different for different manufacturers
Nope , each CPU generation is different . Laptop manufacturer does not make CPU , intel and amd are the one who do that

This is where i have to stop you XD
My laptop has been running strong and its the pit of Mordor.
It is true that running temps that high can AND WILL Cause damage to your card.
Its generally a rule of thumb to run the components just under 90C and not 85C(For laptops. since cooling is almost never decent)
Both cards run near 90C and the only one to reach 103C is the CPU (the reason why i downclock it) it won't cause damage in short term situations
but if you are gaming for hours on end near 90C(or 103C whichever Graphics you DO use) but please. look up the materials they use in cards nowadays (its not wise to expect a chip made from silicon to melt at 103C, and copper has a melting point higher than 200F. Don't expect a 500$ chip to burst into flames. or crash at 103C its not going to do that. unless you feel like running the CPU over 150C be my guest.)
the point is. if you have no proper(or decent) cooling on a laptop (or worse case. a desktop) then you won't get top performance, they will downclock if they reach (most commonly 90C and less common 80C) 90C or so. to prevent them from getting any hotter

TL;DR

- 90c Is fine. unless you run it over 150C
- Your card won't melt as described (might lift some traces)
- Buy a laptop cooler. (and dust out your desktop man. apply some thermals.)

90C is not fine at all . Anything above 85C will make your CPU throttle and lower laptop's lifespan

You may be right but that is not what i'm talking about
Ever heard of Reballing GPU ? It was my job . You should google it , i'm not saying just for fun

Laptop cooler is snakeoil

My laptop (i5 480M + GT 540M) that i bought in 2009 only hits 70C at full load . Most common temp for laptop is 75->85 , anything higher than that is dangerous .

Good for you but i'm sure it won't last long if you keep running it at 90C

There is no such thing like "graphic card" in a multi-media laptop . Most of them are soldered on the mobo
Only high end GPU like GTX 980M or an exceptional MXM low-mid end from a thick gaming laptop like alienware are truely called "a card"

1.laptop coolers are snakeoil : The only answer i have for you. unless you truly had overheating problems in a laptop. you wouldn't understand.
and yes indeed. they DO work. and they also don't work. its hard to explain. what a laptop "Cooler" does is to help cool it down. (what you think is snakeoil. may not be snakeoil) they only lower idle temperatures. which mine is 67C without. and 55C with.
2. There is no such thing like "Graphics card" in a mm Laptop. : Heres where i disagree with you, and agree with you. while some laptops DO have the GPU soldered on.
Most are actually on a seperate card itself. (which you can unscrew. make sure to unplug the wires.) and replace. however, they are more common in the higher tier Laptops.
3.good for you but im sure it won't last long if you keep running at 90C : Again. agree to disagree. while temperature can wear down a card. 90C is a pretty high temperature to run any card at. but imho running a laptop below 90C is next to impossible (cooling restrictions. fans, whatnot)
4. You may be right but that is not what i'm talking about
Ever heard of Reballing GPU ? It was my job . You should google it , i'm not saying just for fun : I might actually do this. EDIT: after some research, it turns out. 99% of the time, its not a solution. it turns out heating the chip can just fix it. but if you're missing some solder balls. you should replace them.

Yet , all my laptops can do that . The only thing i did was reapplying thermal paste
OEM thermal paste of multi-media laptop is shit (also include Apple Macbook Pro / Air)
Multi-media laptop is not made for gaming that's why it doesn't have good cooling units

I want to thank everyone who contributed to this post for the thoughtful discussion about recommended temperature maximums. I still appreciate having access to my old Wii titles, without still owning a Wii, and as such am very grateful to the engineers & programmers who make this emulator tick. Thanks again!
