Hi,
I am trying to set up a private server so I can play Mario Kart Wii with my friends. I followed a tutorial to set up the DWC server emulator, and as far as I can tell the server is working.
The issue I am having seems to be specific to dolphin. The way this service works is that you need to change your DNS settings so that nintendowifi.net routes you to the custom server. After changing my windows DNS settings, it works fine on my browser. I can access the server without it redirecting me to nintendo's actual website. However, these DNS settings do not seem to be applying to dolphin.
I have tried changing the DNS ip address in the virtual wii menu, which didn't work. I tried changing my windows DNS settings on my network adapter, which works on my browser but not on dolphin, and I tried setting a line in the windows HOSTS file to resolve nintendowifi.net to this custom server, but that also didn't work.
Basically my question is:
How in the world does Dolphin's DNS work? Because it doesn't seem to care what settings I change. I have tried reinstalling and clearing my dolphin folder in documents in case there is something caching the dns but that didn't fix anything.
I am guessing that the virtual wii menu internet settings do nothing, but if this is wrong I would like to know what they control and what is controlled by my PC settings.
It is probably of note that I am using a VPN for this, the server is not on my local network. (goal is to be able to play with friends over the internet rather than over LAN). Basically, my computer's ip address is a 192.168.xx.xx and this server is a 10.xx.xx.xx address and they have two different network adapters. Does dolphin bind to a specific network adapter on my computer? It would be fine if Dolphin was only able to access this VPN adapter rather than my LAN.
Lastly, I did add a NoSSL cheat code to my copy of Mario Kart Wii which didn't fix anything.
Thanks.
