As one of the nutters who bought a Vega GPU for gaming, I'm probably in a better position than most to explain why someone might think it's a good idea. For a start, I bought my GPU on launch day and for some reason, it was on sale below RRP. At that point in time, it was similarly priced to a GTX 1070 while giving similar performance. However, as I intended to use an adaptive sync monitor, once the price difference between a similar Freesync and GSync one is taken into account, the AMD route worked out cheaper. Now crypto mining has inflated the price of AMD cards, I'm not sure if it works out like this anymore, but now is a bad time to be buying a GPU if it can be avoided anyway. There is also the matter of Gameworks titles tending to work better on a previous generation AMD GPU than a previous generation NVidia one and many other smaller issues that would potentially have swayed me towards AMD in the case that both companies had similar offerings at similar prices.
OS: Windows 10 64 bit Professional
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5900X
RAM: 16GB
GPU: Radeon Vega 56

How DARE YOU, GOOD SIR!! In the house of the queen!

Seriously though, my first card was an ATI RAGE PRO 4MB. I have lost the romance with the company over the years.
What burns you about NVIDIA? Besides taking your system hostage and all that other cool stuff they do now?

Nothing really. I am one that will buy whatever is best for my system and that my wallet can sustain Smile But I have only bought nVidia GPU's because they tend to be better supported by most emulators and games. On top of that they usually run a bit cooler and because of that make less noise (although I don't know that for sure about the latest Vega-series)

[offtopic]
My first card was actually a Trident MicroSystems 8900D ISA card with 512kb which I later upgraded to 2MB... My first 3D card was a Voodoo2 12MB (for which I later bought a 2nd one so I could run glorious 1024x786 16bit games on my 26" CRT screen with my Wicked3d EyeScream 3d shutterglasses) and then replace an S3 ViRGE 3D 4MB for the Trident since Win98SE didn't like that one... Finally when I stepped into the world of Single Card 3D Processors I bought a nVidia GeForce 2MX 400 with 32MB... Upgraded to a FX5200 64MB, 6800 128MB with unlocked shaderquad and vertexquad, 7900GTX 512MB, 9800GTX 512MB, GTX470 1,28GB, bought myself a laptop with a GTX870m 6GB and now have a GTX780 3GB... seems that ATI/AMD has always been at the lower end at the time I bought my cards. I did have a 9600Pro 256MB at some point in my spare machine which I overclocked like hell and it literally went up in flames, but a lot of my friends I advised an ATI/AMD card and they never had any issues with them. Back then there wasn't anything *but* "proprietary software bullshit". If you wanted accelerated graphics, you either had to use a vendor-supplied api, or get no acceleration.

Then they started to get to the point where the consumer cards had the capabilities required for OpenGL, and MS bought out Direct3d, and suddenly there were real cross-vendor APIs that you could use.

wow... that brings back memories. My first upgrade graphics card was a ISA Diamond Stealth 64 with 2mb vram with sockets to add an additional 2mb which of course i did. After that I bought a Monster Voodoo 2, and then a second one for SLI (long before nVidia bought out voodoo and got their SLI technology)

And sorry about bringing back a necro thread. But I was searching for info on what the best backend is these days.

... sooo. What is the best backend? Last time i used Dolphin was probably 2016 after seeing the HD pack for Xenoblade and recently got the itch to play it again.

Apology appreciated, but you still failed to read forum rules.

Don't necro threads.
