I've recently spent some serious time re-playing Lufia 1 and Lufia 2 for the SNES.
They're great RPGs with excellent story and gameplay.

(But the side quest Ancient Cave in Lufia 2 with 99 levels filled with cheap deaths and way to hard enemies taking roughly 10 hours to complete oh boy... it can make any man weep not to mention the boss that waits down there.
It's not that it's hard but to play 10 hours only to find out that you had to kill it in under 4 turns in order to recieve the reward is just evil.)

However one fascinating thing is that they made Lufia 1 as the sequel to the future prequel Lufia 2 which should have been Lufia 1.
I don't think I have seen that before? Maybe they couldn't create the first story as played in Lufia 2 as they wanted due to technical reasons at that time holding them back.

Lufia is one of the greatest RPG series I have played with the Lunar series for the PSX being on par.
The music, the atmosphere, the depth. What's not to like huh?

A lot of elements in Lufia 2 is taken from the Zelda series with the hookshot, bombs, arrows etc.
Making it somehow much more fun and familiar.
And the puzzles in the dungeons is awesome yet cruel.

I really miss the 90's, the golden age for 2D RPGs.

There was so many great RPGs made back then.

I remember the first time I got in contact with the Lufia series, it was around -98 and it was some screenshots of Lufia 2 displayed in a game magazine here in Sweden called Super Play.
Really good times with almost no internet at all, real magazines and great articles.

I don't know if Lufia is well known? How about you guys do you play them regularly or have you just played them in the past and now forgotten about them?

Lufia is one of the most underrated and unknown RPG's in existance.
Sadly, I didn't know about it either, untill like 5 years ago or so...

Anyway, I recently somehow stumbled upon one of the OST's of Lufia... and my god, I was in love.
I'll definitely play through them... but time... time is the only thing that stops me right now.

I think The Legend of Zelda is a good example of crazy prequel and sequels timelines lol.

The old days were great... because developers made games for people to play and have fun. And not games that play itself *coughFFXIIIcough* with cutscenes after each corner.
Games nowdays are like this compared to the past:

Lufia 1&2 were great RPGs yeah. There were so many great games on SNES anyway... I played them of course. Btw there were 3 other Lufia games : one on GBC, one on GBA I played both of them and another one on DS but I don't know this one. Garteal I agree with your "analysis" about actual RPGs. Between FFVI and FFXIII I made my choice Wink

Hmm Final Fantasy, can't really say that I've played any of them much besides the first one for NES and the tactics one for PSX.
Great analysis though, it feels like that for many games today.
Far to much cut-scenes and less gameplay.

Speaking of PSX, it makes me think of an action RPG game called Alundra 1.
It's kinda like a mix of elements from Zelda, Lufia, Secret of Mana and other RPG games.

Yeah the Lufias made after 1 & 2 isn't really good in my book.
Lufia 3 had a great plot and everything but the Game Boy Color held it back way to much for me.

And Lufia The Ruins of Lore for the GBA was semi good, no real plot like the three first regarding the sinistrals.
The DS one was a reboot of Lufia 2 but it was to focused on 3D and other eye candy, no real hit in my book.

Then I have to say that the PSX version of Lunar Silver Star Story Complete which was remade for the PSP in 2D was a far better reboot.

As for our hero Mario and his RPGs, Super Mario RPG for the SNES is my favourite with Paper Mario for N64 second.
The Mario & Luigi series was OK but Super Mario RPG get's played a lot here.

Alundra of course a great game. The sequel was quite good too although it had become a "FFVII-like" with pseudo-3D graphics. Coming back to Final Fantasy I mentioned FFVI because I was amazed by this game when I played it for the first time : very long, good plot, a lot of different characters... The precursor of following FF games. I had bought my PSX to play FFVII I remember that I spent hours on it Wink. Breath of Fire was a good series too. So many good games...

Ah ah Big Grin Yeah FFVII and FFIX are great games and finish them 100% is a real challenge. I'd like to make a whole quest of these games as I did years ago but I have not enough free time to unfortunately... I don't really like FFXIII but of course it's a good game I hope next episodes will be better though

Those newer Final Fantasies looks a bit new for my taste.
However I wouldn't mind playing the ones for SNES, they look really good in it's full 2D glory.
