Super Smash Bros. Melee help

Howdy! I'm new to the dolphin emulator but I have a major issue with it right now. I'm trying to run Super Smash Bros. Melee but none of my controls are working. I'm trying to use the keyboard on my laptop and it doesn't work. I tried re-downloading the emulator and the rom but neither worked. How would you suggest I fix it? Edit: Also I got it run once and it ran perfectly fine but now I can only get to the part where it says "PRESS START" but none of the controls work and i'm just stuck there.
