Super Mario Galaxy 2 World 2 Freeze

I played the first Grand Star stage 10 or so times playing around with the settings trying to get through. I ended up passing through after I set the volume to 1%, and passed through to the next universe. However, after the big purple guy shows me the new galaxy's, he flys back to the faceship and the game crashes. The game hasn't saved yet, so if I reload it, I am still in the first universe. I am not sure why its freezing when he goes back to the faceship. Any ideas? The attached picture is exactly where it freezes. I've heard of others with this (or similar) issue, but have yet to see any solution. Any other settings that I should muck around with?
