I removed that Wild Glide texture (tex1_256x256_m_123c307fab917b99_1) from SMG2 but I kept it in SMG1 since I didn't see it causing any problems, or maybe it's just not being used or not in the same way. I have an idea of why some of these textures have issues but there is not much that can be done about them, at least not yet. I missed the other issue you mentioned but I can take a look at it.
Edit: I opened up a thread to debate the issue I was talking about involving mipmaps here. This is a big reason why some textures in Mario Galaxy can be troublesome when trying to retexture them. This is definitely why the "Wild Glide" texture is all messed up, and could be the reason for the canopy texture.
