I just had a quick question of about SSDs.

Do you have to store games on the SSD in order to play them quickly? As in, if I had games on my external hard drive, would it still go faster?
Also, if I had games on my external hard drive (it's a 1TB USB 3.0 drive), would they run at around the same speed as the ones on my actual computer?

I'm a super noob when it comes to this because I've never owned an SSD before. My guess is that it has to be on SSD in order to utilize any speed upgrades?

Imagine you have a bicycle. And in order to get to work faster in the morning you go out and buy a car. Does simply owning the car and not actually using it allow you to get to work any faster?

Depends on a number of factors. Generally no.

For starters is the connection actually utilizing usb 3.0 mode? As in you have a usb 3.0 drive plugged into a usb 3.0 port on the computer using a usb 3.0 cable and you have usb 3.0 drivers installed on the computer.

With UAS (usb attached scsi) usb 3.0 speeds can get close enough to sata for the difference to be considered negligible.

In order to achieve this you need to have a usb 3.0 connection where both the devices support it and you need to be running an OS that supports it (windows 8 or higher for windows). Not all usb 3.0 controllers and usb 3.0 devices support it. If it's an older motherboard or device it's unlikely to support it. If it's newer then it might. Which external HDD and which motherboard are you using? Or if you're using a usb 3.0 expansion card which one?

I'm not too sure about all the motherboard stuff, I broke my PC last time I tried upgrading it myself so I just bought an Alienware Alpha Core i5. No idea what kind of motherboard is in it though :l
