You've certainly got that right. As much as everyone complains about performance here, sometimes it's just completely fucking irrelevant to the problem.
If it tells you you're "using a GameCube controller", you might want to a) set Wiimote > Wiimote 1 to "None" and click the "GCPad" button to see the default GameCube controller controls, or b) set Config > GameCube > Port 1 to "None" and figure out the game's Wii Remote controls. A lot of games support both Wii Remotes and GameCube controllers, thus you occasionally run into conflicts between the controls if you have them both enabled.
