Virtual Console is an emulator that run particular ROM on Nintendo platforms, they contain ROM. It appears that the ROM extracted from VC (see how) could be played on Nintendo 64 emulators, and the ROM size appear to be unchanged with the one dumped directly from N64 cartridge.

Interestingly though, Nintendo 64 emulators could play without a problem even on low end PC and yet Dolphin still struggle playing the Nintendo 64 game, because, it's actually emulating an emulator. Maybe someday Dolphin will extract ROM on the fly and play it directly? Or run other Nintendo 64 emulator core/plugin(s) for it?

Nope, Dolphin is just meant to emulate the GC/Wii, as the hardware is very similar between the two systems since the Wii is just an upgraded GC. The N64 is too different of a system to be natively run in Dolphin. Most VC titles play without any issues. When you say you're struggling, which games are you referring to? And have you tried the latest dev build: https://dolphin-emu.org/download/ as it is way faster than 4.0.2.

Maybe I overlooked other Nintendo 64 games than Zelda ones. I've usually downloaded the latest build every time I play Dolphin.

I understand that Nintendo 64 is very different than GameCube and Wii system. I think it would be awesome to be able use Dolphin as front end for Nintendo 64 core/plugins as that would append Wii and GameCube controllers to it in a very convenient way with familiar hotkeys and features.

Considering that Dolphin plays many N64 games better than N64 emulators do... I think "struggling" depends on your perspective!

Majoras mask or any of the N64 zelda games run like crap and i hear that the collectors edition version of majoras mask has a lot of bugs and lower framerate compared to the n64 version

orly "dolphin+VC is better than n64 emulator"? all n64 games are extremely slow, doesn't the wiki say Majora's Mask is also unstable?

I guess that the less-supported-in-n64-emu games work better in Dolphin, as Nintendo optimized the N64-on-PowerPC emulators to run without glitches on limited hardware, and Dolphin's emulating the Wii sufficiently well to introduce less glitches than PC N64 emulation does, albeit slowly due to double-emulation.

The correct thing to do is to extract the ROM and play it in a N64 emulator. Dolphin is not a N64 emulator, even if it can run N64-on-PowerPC emulators.

Mario Tennis is amazing on Dolphin. Majora's Mask and OoT on VC are unstable due to unknown reasons, but, the Collector's Edition/Master Quest ones are flawless at this point. It's hit or miss, but, it's very very high number of hits at this point.

Paper Mario 64 have a lot of graphical glitches in almost all N64 emulators I tried but the VC version running in Dolphin doesn't show any of these issues...
