So many options.. what is/are the best combination of controllers?

I really want to start using a Wii controller to replace my poorly mapped Xbox 360 controller for Dolphin. But.. there are a LOT of variations out there..


So far I'm looking at:
A black Wii controller
A black nunchuck
Classic controller pro limited edition (Gold Goldeneye version)
Maybe a regular classic controller
Maybe a gamecube-style controller
A wireless sensor bar
(thinking about buying all of this)


What I'm looking for:
As much wireless as possible
Preferably black, not a huge deal though
Under ~$50 for everything (no problems with buying used)
Want to buy the right stuff the first time around

I play mostly easy Nintendo games for enjoyment (LOZ, Mario, etc.) Just want something that makes it feel like I'm playing a Wii game and not an Xbox. I don't know what Wii Motion Plus is, but I don't play games like Tennis or DDR etc. I also play a bunch of GameCube games. Dolphin is great, thank you all:tu:


I'm a bit confused about the following:
-Is the motion sensor bar necessary? What is the difference in models? (wireless vs wired)
-Is it better to buy a WiiU controller?
-Are there cooler aftermarket controllers that I've missed?

Thanks, I want to make sure I've found all the right answers before committing to buy. It'll help a lot of other people in the same situation too. I'm fine with spending a few hours troubleshooting when pairing for the first time, I just don't want to have a bunch of controllers laying around that are useless.

Wiimote with/without Nunchuk for most games, Classic Controller for some games (RPGs), and GC pad for GC games.

It's recommended for some games. A wireless model (with batteries ) will do the job just fine

I'd recommend updating to 3.5 or latest, we don't support old versions here

Get a Wiimote (not a Wii Remote Plus if you can find one), a nunchuk, a classic controller pro, and a sensor bar. And get a motion plus if you didn't get a Wii Remote Plus so you can play Skyward Sword, Wii Sports Resort, etc. By having all of this, you'll be able to play all the games as they were intended. Which is very important when it involves motion control; you can't emulate that on a traditional gamepad.

As for GameCube games, you could keep using your 360 pad since it lines up well enough, or you could use the Classic Controller Pro with glovepie. Glovepie sucks, but the classic controller pro is AWESOME, so in many cases I find it worth it. And since it uses what you already got you keep the costs down a bit. If you don't mind spending more money, another alternative would be a PS3 Controller with the SCP drivers. It's somewhere in the middle in difficulty to set up, and while it isn't the awesomest controller ever (that's the classic controller pro ), it's very high quality and you don't have to fool with glovepie's notorious unreliability. And you can use bluetooth if you get a second bluetooth adapter.

Wiimote Plus has Wii Motion Plus built-in.

Wii Motion Plus is just the little adapter that sticks on the basic Wii controller (makes motion controls more accurate)


So don't I want to look for a Wiimote Plus? Or does the Wiimote + Wii Motion Plus adapter work better with Dolphin? Nintendo had a brilliant idea with Wii accessories marketing but it sure makes things confusing.

Hardly. Wii Remote Pluses do work, but they are a pain in the ass. Avoid them if you can.

Well "non-TR" models work just fine and "TR" models work with Toshiba stack so I guess it can be qualified as "working" .

Seriously I've got 2 old Wiimotes with the add-on and 2 Wimotes with built-in Motion Plus (non-TR models though ) and it works like a charm. That's why I said both worked pretty fine

Unfortunately all Wiimotes sold in the past two years are -TR. The chances of finding a wii remote plus that isn't a -TR is pretty slim. But you can rely on the basic wiimote to work fine.

Ugh, too much variation!!

On the plus side I found a Classic Controller Pro Golden Eye version & a black Wiimote+rumble pack add-on & nunchuck (not plus) and sensor bar.

On the minus side I don't know if it'll all work.
-Wiimote came with a rumble pack but not Motion Plus
-Goldeneye controller is corded (has same connector as the nunchuck). Maybe it'll work plugged into the Wiimote
-Sensor bar is corded (has some odd connection that I think is Wii-specific)


Figured that info might help anyone else looking for the perfect controller setup.
