So I think i bought the wrong computer... advice for fixing it up?

speaking of GPUs, i'm having a hard time overclocking the 450. based on what i've read it should handle a 900mhz core clock rate and 2,000 memory rate easily. the max clock i hit without a benchmark program crashing was 926, so i set a rate of 911 to be safe. the benchmarks ran fine, but i got crashes in dolphin with windows saying "graphics card recovered"; the clock was reset each time. i tried 883mhz and still crashed, just a few seconds later than before.
i'm wondering if the problem is that the voltage isn't high enough or that the 500w PSU may not be enough. most people didn't seem to have to raise the voltage to get to 900mhz, though i could be mistaken. i'm not even screwing with the memory, since pushing it to 2,000 caused windows to crash and repair and refresh itself afterward... good thing i didn't have many programs installed yet. i've set the core clock at 850 and it seems to run fine there, but i know the card should be gaining more than that before becoming unstable. it's not too vital, since re4 is already running at 99% speed with 4x IR, 4xAA and 8xIF at 1080p, but i would like to squeeze a few more FPS out if i could. 06-11-2012, 11:42 AM
Overclocking doesn't help performance in emulators.
I've tried. Dunno if I'm right or not. I thought you were talking about CPU overclocking . You're right , GPU overclocking doesn't help at all (Dolphin) Laptop: Mini PC :: 06-11-2012, 12:22 PM

that's a relief, now i don't have to screw with it. why does it have no effect in dolphin?

Dolphin benefits from the memory interface (128-bit, 192-bit, 256-bit.) more than anything. I think. A better GPU would be the only solution I can think of off of the top of my head. The GTX 560. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6814130664 Or just be happy. I love my GTS 450, and would never overclock it. Or whatever. 06-11-2012, 03:11 PM

I'm too tired to give a proper answer to this right now but the really short answer is:
1. Dolphin usually runs out of video memory bandwidth way before it runs out of shader throughput. Since video cards with low shader throughput tend to have low video memory bandwidth and vice versa video memory bandwidth tends to have a big impact on performance while shader throughput usually does not. 2. Core clock may sometimes have an effect as well. I don't really know why but I assume it has to do with faster cache read/write. 3. Shader clock and SP count are tied to shader throughput so you can pretty much ignore them. 4. Memory bandwidth (in MB/s) = (memory bus bitwidth / 8) * effective memory clock (also called data transfer rate) In other words both the bus bitwidth (128 bit, 192 bit, 256 bit, whatever) and the memory/memory bus clock rates both affect memory bandwidth. 5. Unless your graphics settings are too high your cpu will bottleneck it anyways. If the cpu is the bottleneck overclocking the gpu probably won't have any effect on performance. What were the stock clocks and voltages? What voltage were you trying to use? Did you check your temps? If so what were they under full load? You should also realize that not all video cards overclock the same.

the stock specs were 783mhz core clock, 1804 memory, 1.062 voltage. not sure about the shader, since ati afterburner doesn't offer that adjustment anymore. i left the voltage alone and raised the core and memory clocks independently of one another. the temps never got out of control, in the upper 50c range at full load (max is near 100c).
i only got artifacting from raising the core clock once and the memory clock never resulted in any artifacting, even when it was obviously too high, so system crashes were the only signal that anything was too high. to be honest it's an extremely tedious way to test the system out because the crashes can come much later and there's no practical way to tell what values are safe without testing for hours after each adjustment; if it provides no frame rate boost i won't bother with it. 06-11-2012, 06:06 PM
which is better:
1. good enough processor with ordinary gpu, or 2. high end gpu with ordinary processor ?? have to choose one option for low budget occasion
CPU: Intel core2 duo 2.53 ghz
RAM: 1GB Kingstone Intel ® 82945G express chipset family Windows 7 ultimate 32bit Dolphin 2.0 |
