Slowdowns and bad performance on fairly decent setup

My setup:

- Intel Core i7 860 @ 2.80GHz
- Asus GeForce GTX 570 DirectCU II 1280MB
- Gigabyte GA-P55-UD5
- Corsair 8GB DDR3 XMS3 PC12800 1600MHZ CL8
- Seasonic X-760 760W
- Antec P183 /m Noctua NF-P12-1300
- Intel X-25M G2 80GB
- Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB
- Windows 7 Professional x64

Dolphin and the ISOs are placed on the WD 2TB drive. I haven't tweaked Dolphin at all, the settings are left on default.

I have tried different games and the the slowdowns happens on all of them. I have used a similar setup before, only with an ATI card and as far as I remember that worked just fine even with quite high settings.

I have no idea where to start figuring this out, because my system works fine with all other tasks so I'm quite sure the hardware itself in just fine. Any help would be much appreciated. Smile

Let's start with what version of Dolphin you're using, and what games you tried.

I have tried Super Mario Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Bros and Donkey Kong Country Returns. I use Dolphin-win-x64-v3.0-179.

I tried using OpenGL instead of Direct3D9 and that actually worked a bit better, it was playable although still choppy at certain places. The WiiMote also lags a bit from time to time.

First of all you should be using 3.0, the latest official release.

Next we need you to post screenshots of all of your settings.

On a core i7 860 it should be good enough for fullspeed on most levels as long as he uses HLE audio. He shouldn't be getting such terrible performance issues.

Changing to 3.0 did help quite a bit, SMG2 is now playable. The slowdowns do make the game quite hard at times though, so hopefully there is something I can do to get better performance. I have included my settings as attachments.

Thanks for the help so far!
Here are the rest of my settings.

Put FrameLimit to Off and disable Audio Throttle

That didn't seem to do anything to the game performance, and it also made gathering star bits almost impossible. All the buttons work as normal, but the "pointing part" (I'm not sure what it's called) was difficult to use. The game also went into overdrive a few times, it felt like the game was running at 200%.

Why on earth would you recommend that!?!?

Indeed it did, that's because he basically told you to disable all of the speed limiting measures that dolphin employs.

Set framelimiter back to auto. Turn on lock threads to cores, leave audio throttle off, change the audio backend to Xaudio2 (it won't help performance but you should do it anyways), turn on v-sync, and set texture cache accuracy all the way to fast.

Other than that all you can do is overclock the cpu (which will help a lot).

By the way with that video card you can raise your fullscreen resolution as high as you want, and 2x internal resolution + 9xSSAA (lower the internal resolution to 1.5x if you experience a drop in performance but you shouldn't) or 4x internal resolution + no AA should be fine (4xSSAA doesn't work right now). And you can increas anisotropic filtering to 16x without any performance penalty.
