Have you seen the Bitlocker source code to certify it is backdoored?

I think it was mentioned in an article I read mentioning one of the Ed's leaked documents as something with a fixed cost to have decrypted. Even if there's not a backdoor, there's a vulnerability.

So, I've actually changed my opinion on motherboard and RAM: I'm going to go with a more expensive option that supports ECC RAM.

Motherboard: ASRock E3C226D2I (http://www.ldlc.ch/fiche/PB00160259.html)
RAM: 2x8GB ECC Unbuffered (http://www.ldlc.ch/fiche/PB00145033.html)

Cost++, but at least that makes data corruption way less likely. Since I'm going to end up keeping this server for a while, it's probably a good investment.

Also, this motherboard has other cool features: internal USB2 for the OS, 2 1Gbps ethernet, 1 IPMI port (with iKVM!), watchdog, TPM support, etc.

And... just bought everything!

Bought 4 different hard drive models too, to avoid synchronized failures. Ended up keeping my overspec'd PSU because I could not find anything as good available in less than a week, and I did not want to wait :p

Will post pictures when it's built and benchmarks when it's configured Smile

I'm pretty sure you need a xeon cpu to enable ECC.

Weird. So then wtf is the difference between low end xeons and desktop cpus these days?

I think maybe you might be able to use xeons in multi-cpu setups. I'm not entirely sure, though.

The higher end models yes. But that's not what I'm referring to here. The E3 series are all single socket single die just like the desktop lineup.

Bleh, build is mostly complete now, but it turns out that the PSU I've originally chosen is not standard ATX length, it's 2cm longer, which does not fit in my case.

Sad

For the time being the PSU is sticking out of the case, but that's really stupid and annoying.
