Setting up controller

I just got Dolphin & a game but don't know how to set up the controller.
Are there any step by step direction's ?

Which game?
If it's a GC game go into GCPad. If it's a Wii game go into Wiimote and choose "Emulated Wiimote" (I assume you don't use a real Wiimote). Then select your "Device" (your controller or keyboard etc). And map buttons as you want
