In Xenoblade NTSC if you delete / nop the branch at 8049E900 it removes lighting effects and the need to use scaled efb copies. It automatically starts to scale textures without needing the scaled efb option on. Is this weird? I didn't think that would ever happen. Using Vulkan if that matters.

Seem like you've disabled the ingame postprocessing effect. Postprocessing requires upscaled efb copies, else you'll be limited to 1x IR.

Interesting, so if there were no post processing, you wouldn't need scaled efb to get better graphics at all?

Yes. If the game doesn't use render-to-texture, we don't need to upscale textures.
