Question
I recently wiped my C: drive and reinstalled Windows 8 on there. All my user data was safely preserved on my D: drive.

Previously, my Windows username was Hero. My Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii) saves went in this folder:
D:\Users\Hero\Documents\Dolphin Emulator\Wii\title\00010000\53583445\data

With Windows reinstalled on C:, I used a new username, GalacticCore. I simply cut & paste all of Hero's documents (D:\Users\Hero\Documents\) into the folder for GalacticCore (D:\Users\GalacticCore\Documents\)

When I ran Xenoblade Chronicles with my new Windows install, all my save games had disappeared. I was ready to cry, I'm 65 hours in and REALLY didn't want to have to start again!!

But then I right-clicked on the ISO in Dolphin and noticed that the save game location was still pointing to the previous path (Hero's Documents folder). The user Hero no longer existed, but Dolphin went ahead and created the appropriate folders anyway.

I was expecting Xenoblade Chronicles to look for its save game location here:
D:\Users\GalacticCore\Documents\Dolphin Emulator\Wii\title\00010000\53583445\data

As a temporary workaround, I copied the contents from GalacticCore's "Documents\Dolphin Emulator\" folder over the top of the Hero ones.

Voila! Now my old game saves were accessible again! Thank goodness for that!

1) Is this a bug in Dolphin?
2) Is it possible to configure the Wii save game folder location so that it saves into GalacticCore's Documents and not Hero's?

Dolphin sets the global user directory to the user folder on the windows drive, which is always on the C: drive! So it should be C:\Users\[yourname]\Documents\Dolphin Emulator.

So you copied from D:\Users\Hero to D:\Users\GalaticCore? Neither should work! Dolphin would have created a user directory on the C: drive (unless you changed it beforehand). Are you sure you got all of this information correct?

Looks like there is an issue (see link) with the latest Dolphin's Wii save location. I think this might explain my issue.

Are you sure? I always move my Documents library onto a different disk from the OS in case I want to wipe & rebuild the OS. I've always found that Dolphin follows whatever drive the Documents folder is on.

To move your Documents library, right-click on Documents in explorer and choose Properties. GO to the location tab. You'll see you can move the Documents library (and Videos, Pictures, Music etc) onto another drive if you want to.

When it's working properly, Dolphin should save into the Documents library, regardless of which drive it's on.

At present Dolphin is still saving my Xenoblade saves into the wrong user's folder! But I have a workaround (described above), so it's not a major issue.

I had a nightmare as new user...

I was using a early version of 58xx and wanted to update to 5875, i clicked to export in tools.
I didn't override...i had two folders

C:/Games/Dolphin-x64(my first dolphin)
C:/Games/Dolphin5875

As soon i extracted 5875 i lost all my config and saves... they still were on Dolphin-x64(physically, no matter what dolphin i ran they were empty) but i had to copy and paste from x64 Folder to C:\Users\Kroktar\Documents\Dolphin Emulator and all my settings were back.

I had my savestates...but i had to import one by one to get the normal saves..

Im still not sure how to do it correctly next time, i tried the wiki but it was outdated i think...but hey i gained a few fps

He's right MaJoR, I can confirm that Dolphin will default to Dolphin Emulator folder inside Documents folder. So, if you change Documents folder location to whatever else (e.g. go to Documents folder properties and edit path in Location tab), Dolphin will follow it by default...

Yes, I had that exact same problem. I just restored an older Dolphin from my recycle bin and will wait awhile until they fix the problem

Thanks guys.

I've just tested using 4.0-5886. Unfortunately, the specific issue I'm getting is still happening.

Dolphin is both loading and saving using the wrong user's Documents folder. I verified this by right-clicking on the game's ISO and opening the save file location. I also checked the timestamp of the new savefile.

Is there a way to manually change the Wii save file location to override the ones being used by specific games?

As an experiment, I tried changing the global user directory following these instructions.

I still get the same issue. Xenoblade Chronicles loads and saves to the wrong user's Documents folder. All other Dolphin settings are picked up from the correct folder, as specified by the registry entry.
