Hello, after hearing and watching the s8 run dolphin emulator almost flawlessly, I couldn't wait to try it out.
Now I received my phone today but I am getting God awful results.
The same games as they are playing and lagging like crazy, any way to fix this?
Are there any particular settings they are using?
What's going on?

You probably watched one video where somebody ran one game for a short amount of time. We all saw that video.

The S8 doesn't run Dolphin well lol. No device does yet. The S8 probably runs a handful of easy to emulate GC/Wii games fine. But most of the popular ones? Heck no.

You got duped.

It is worse, there are two kinds of S8 with completely different hardware: There is the snapdragon variant shown in the video, and the exynos one, which is by far slower for dolphin. Which one do you have?

I have the exynos version, however, when you bench mark the snap Dragon against the exynos on both cpu and gpu the exynos comes out much better and the exynos has a different gpu. So I don't understand how the snap Dragon is that much better

The snapdragon one supports EXT_buffer_storage, the exynos one doesn't. Bad luck, benchmarks don't test bad written game engines. And emulators behave like very bad engines in terms of GPU usage.

Fun fact, this extension has no hardware requirements and it was highlighted about 3 years ago for lower GL overhead. But it is not required for any GL ES version, so Mali is just lazy here.

This won't really help the OP much, but Dolphin just tweeted a little PSA about the Galaxy S8.

Your result is consistent with my s8 exynos version it is worse the the exynos version of the s7 edge. As long as there are no good vulkan drivers forget about it.
Despite this i am reasonably happy of mine.

For other buyers once again be warned don't buy the exynos version of the s8 because it is faster. Without support it is useless.

In non dolphin stuff the s8 is a little faster. OngfxBench for the newest one a lot faster 1/3 faster.

I have a feeling the thermal management in the S8 will be better thanks to Samsung's new 10nm dye process(they're the ones making Qualcomm's 835 chip). I'm still pretty optimistic about the 835 dolphin performance wise.

People were optimistic about the 808

And the 820

And the 821

Every single SoC had only marginal improvements in Dolphin. This year is no different. A bit better in Dolphin, but nothing even close to what you can get on a cheap PC. Don't go buying a device this year with playing Dolphin acceptably as a factor. Seriously. Every year people do this, and every year people get disappointed.

Now if you want to develop on Dolphin, please, by all means, pick your phone based on perf. Wink
