I can't fully confirm this method works without owning a -TR remote, but it sounds legit, and it fits the facts I know, namely that the main difference with -TR remotes is that pairing is a requirement (as well as a certain Bluetooth feature that only Microsoft's stack doesn't support). I'll put this thread/video into my text file full of things to paste, since I do occasionally run into OS X users with these remotes.
