I am absolutely certain that my processor is bottlenecking me, but I am hoping to receive some confirmation on my thought. I am currently running Win 7 64it, newest version of Dolphin as well. I have a AMD Athlon II x2, running at 2.8ghz, 4 gb of ram, and an ATI 4870 for a vid card. I have moderate success with Zelda WW, and better than expected with SSBM and Starfox Assault. But Fzero just seems to clunk along at 20 fps (unplayable). If I was to move up to a Phenom II (x4 940 is really whats in my budget) will that make an improvement to playable? I don't typically run the games with visual improvements (maybe 720p on the resolution).

Barely.

F-Zero GX is barely playable because dual core is (was?) broken in master.
Phenom II X4 955 runs F-Zero GX at not less than 80% speed at intro and start of the race, and full speed in rest of the game with proper settings (accurate vbeam on, EFB to RAM) and hashless build. OCed to 4.2GHz it runs at 100% everywhere. Dual core seems to be stable now, at least in hashless branch and i'm getting 100% with these settings: 4x IR, 16xQ CSAA, 8xAF, 2048x1536 res. Update: downclocked CPU to stock 3.2GHz and it's still full speed everywhere, it looks like old video card was not powerful enough like it was with Arc Rise Fantasia. 07-30-2012, 10:53 AM
That's better news. The motherboard goes up to a 965 BE, so I may look at that as an option instead.

Yeah it will be better than buying cheap motherboard and pentium sandy bridge which will be a lot slower in many tasks than phenom II 965BE.
And i'm not really sure it will be any faster in Dolphin. It still can't handle LLE in heavy games and will be slower in multithreaded apps. If move to Intel platform, then it must be a good motherboard + i5-2500k, not office junk. |
