The reason why is that Wii disks aren't technically DVDs, even though a blank disk could become either. For a start, IIRC the data starts marginally closer to the centre of the disk than the DVD spec allows, so to read it all, you need to be able to hack the firmware of the drive to position the head outside of its normal range. There's also a mechanism by which a DVD drive can determine if the thing in it is actually a DVD and not a random bit of plastic (maybe a certain region that always has the same data or something like that) but it's different for Wii disks. It's a fairly effective anti-piracy measure up until someone manages to hack a Wii.
