@Kayael: That makes sense to me now after seeing the pic, I figured it had to be something like that. Paletted textures have always been a pain in the ass in one way or another. I'm guessing that no other paletted textures ends up with the same lookup hash in this game, or there would definitely be glitches (that character texture would end up on other models or object).
I don't know if the devs could be convinced to change the wildcard to support texture hashes for a niche case like this unless its more widespread. Even I can see the complications that could arise from misusing a wildcard for the texture name. For example, the textures below are all different, with different texture hashes, but all share a tlut hash. Wildcard the texture name on any of them and who knows which texture would be loaded: the proper texture or the one with a wildcard.
And I can only imagine the results if someone tried to do something like... "tex1_16x40_$_$_8.dds". My guess is that would have to blocked lol, and only allow one wildcard or the other. Although a single texture matching almost everything... would certainly be interesting to see.
At the same time, texture path authors/maintainers are generally not idiots. The fact a custom dolphin was created for this purpose is a proof enough. If explained well enough somewhere (like this post), I think it could be beneficial. Wildcard in itself is niche already, so I doubt that many people even need to use it in the first place. I do want to collect more info on this issue, as I would hate to see a texture pack, especially as nice as this one, be locked down to a custom dolphin version for future's sake (especially if RE2 audio ever gets officially fixed).
@Admentus: You mentioned duplicates when it comes to N64 games. Are these textures dumping the same way as resident evil? Meaning, they are paletted textures (double hashed), the texture hash changes, and the tlut hash does not change.
