I know the official Wii U adapter is probably the best bet, but they are far between and quite expensive even used at this point.

Are any of the third party devices reasonable in Linux (Ubuntu 18.04)?

Also, while it hasn't been released, what are the odds that the Switch GC adapter will just be a repackaged Wii U GC adapter since the Wii U adapters already work with the switch?

I'm pretty impatient, but I may hold out and see what the Switch one looks like, unless there is pretty good support for a 3rd party device or two.

Suggestions?

If they are compatible with the Wii U, they should work equally well.

I don't think it's going to literally be a repacked Wii U adapter, since the new adapters have been shown to say Nintendo instead of Wii U at the top, but I think it's likely they'll work the same way.

Thanks for the quick response.  That is what I meant regarding the Switch adapter.  Same innards as WiiU GC adapter, but different casing/branding.  No need to re-invent the wheel here.

I may just hold off until SSMBU and pick it up for Switch with the Switch adapter (as long as my assumption holds).  Time to dust off my original GC controllers.  I've been craving some MPrime in dolphin-emu with the correct controller.

Just picked up the Switch version. Packaging indicates WiiU compatibility. I will confirm with Dolphin tonight.

I just hooked up my Switch GC adapter and followed the instructions on the Wiki. Works perfectly with Dolphin. It seems like the innards may be the exact same as the Wii U one. Gonna have to rip all my GC games now that I have a good way to play them.

Yeah, just now had time to get it working.  Nintendo didn't even try changing the VID or PID.  Simply a re-skinned WiiU adapter.

Works beautifully under Ubuntu 18.04.
