Question
Hey guys. I love you to pieces.

I got the idea to play all my favorite Wii Guitar Hero/Rock Band games on Dolphin with my Wiimote (wii remote) guitars after my Wii burned out...
I've been playing other games on Dolphin for a while now.

Unfortunately, the Wii guitar does not seem to work with Dolphin. They are legit Wii controllers, 2 of them, both functional. Using software tools, I have confirmed that they communicate with PC just fine, while connecting my Wiimote to my comp using bluetooth.

I thought that there might be some native support for the Wii Guitar using "real Wiimote", but unfortunately, there is no response in-game when I try to use the guitar with the Wiimote connected... The Wiimote can be used just fine, but needless to say, I would like to use the guitar if possible.

I have tried using Dolphin 5.0, LATEST DEV, and 4.1

Any ideas? Is this simply not implemented, or is there something I need to do to get the guitar to work?

I am am aware that I could use third party software tools to map inputs from the wii guitar to an emulated Wiimote, but in that case I'd rather just buy some wired 360 guitars.

So, concisely, my questions are: Is there real-Wii-controller wii-guitar controler support? Are there plans to support wii-mote guitars natively?

... And, although I'm not much of an open-source developer... How much work would it take from "it's in an old branch" to "we'd have to refactor major components"?

Thanks guys. Love your work.

~ Ben

Ok so, here are some instructions for how to diagnose this:

  • Do not connect the Wii Remote via your computer's bluetooth. If you have, remove everything there, as that can interfere with Dolphin's communication. Since you are using Real Wii Remote (emulated bluetooth, real physical wii remote), all you need to do is press the Refresh button in Dolphn's controller menu and the sync button on your wii remote at the same time. No pairing necessary! You could also turn on continuous scanning so you don't have to push the refresh button, but lets leave that alone for now!
  • Make sure you are using Real Wii Remote, or Bluetooth Passthrough. Nothing emulated or *shiver* Hybrid nonsense. Just to make it clear, Guitar Hero controllers absolutely did not work with Hybrid Wii Remote.
  • You didn't mention the Wii Remotes working outside of Guitar Hero (only that they work in general), so make sure you are doing the above, then test that first and make sure the Wii Remote is working in another software. You can use the Wii Menu or some homebrew if you don't want to bother dumping a game, even if you don't have a sensor bar set up, at least make sure the game detects it and buttons are working.

Do all of that and report the results please!

Got it. It's gone. I hooked it up to Dolphin using the sync button and continuous scanning.

Check.

Wii Remote works in rockband 1 (works in all games).
Fully functional. FYI I have played through numerous games with this remote and another. There are no issues with wiimote functionality in-game that I have experienced until I tried using the Wiimote with the guitar.

To reiterate, I proved that the guitars are not busted by confirming that the inputs are detected coming from the controller, back when I was fiddling with manually syncing the controllers outside of Dolphin.

When I boot up Rock band with the guitar connected, it cannot detect the guitar. It says "How to navigate using the Microphone and Wii Remote". So the guitar is not being detected for some reason...

FYI, the two guitars are just standard Guitar Hero brand controllers, one Les Paul, and the other... idk... Not Les Paul. Neither is detected.

A little off-track, but t's probably also worth noting that all 3 guitar hero games I have refuse to boot up on Dolphin. The rock band games boot up just fine. This is peculiar, because they are supposed to work according to the compatibility Wiki. Odd. The dumps are fine.

Please note that all of this testing I have done is on both Dolphin 5 and the latest released build of Dolphin.

That is what would happen if you tried to play Rock Band 1 on a Wii with a Guitar Hero controller. Only Rock Band 2 and later (and all the Guitar Hero games, of course) support Guitar Hero controllers.

Great news! I can confirm that my controller DOES work for Rock Band 2! Which means the original point of this thread is solved.

I didn't consider that Rock Band 1 doesn't support Guitar Hero controllers. Sheesh Confused Good eye.

I am curious as to why my Guitar Hero roms are not working, but Ill start a new thread for that if I can't find a solution... I have done my homework and tried different setting, but I can't seem to get it past the black screen...

Anyways, thank you so much, the both of you. I am one happy camper! Smile

UPDATE: I actually figured out the Guitar Hero ROM issue... Turns out those games don't like being run on dual-cores... When I turned that option off in settings, they worked.

I can't believe how smoothly this went.
