Not sure what I'll do with it yet. Most likely ARM kernel development (always wanted to experiment with an OS where all syscalls are asynchronous "by default" instead of the current model which tends to have blocking syscalls instead), probably some dolphin-arm patches too.

Where you by any chance born with a rare birth defect that gave you multiple brains that operate in parallel for increased efficiency?

Well, by "DIY computer board", I meant essentially a DIY computer where you provide everything (software, external displays, data storage) in the form of a "bare-bones" board. My phrasing is ambiguous though, so the mixup isn't altogether unexpected :p

ARM SoC's seem to be the most prolific item for what I looking to do. They're extremely cheap. The Gooseberry and Hackberry are around $60. I need something that's low enough in price so that replacing hardware isn't an issue. Preferably, I'd also like to keep the power consumption similar to those of a smartphone/tablet-esque device. If you know of any kits similar to the ones discussed that use another architecture for the CPU, do share, I'm all ears.

I'm not aiming to do anything like an HTPC, at least in terms of functionality. Take a look at the Dingoo A320. It's a great hand-held for emulators. Mine has TV-out, but I'd like something where I can plug in a joystick and play it. Plus, I want the experience of designing and creating my own personal "console". It's sorta a geek dream I've always had.

I've been looking at ARM SoCs for at least two years now, and the RPi was my first dive. I had no idea what kind of processing power certain ARM chips had, but I'm fairly sure a Cortex A-8 and above would do fine. The OpenPandora has one running at 600MHz and it runs a lot of emulators just fine, and I think most don't even use the GPU.

Nah, just a lot of "free" time and a lot of stubbornness.

EDIT: Oh, forgot about something in my ARM TODO list: I'd also like to work on Lima, the FOSS Mali-400 graphics drivers. Looks fun Smile

Must I point out the obvious? This is not the kind of stuff that a normal 18 year old possesses the skillset to do or wants to do with their free time.

It's mostly a matter of how you choose to spend your time. Working on problems you don't have a clue how to solve and learning new stuff for 6-8h a day for 6 years could give that skillset to most people imho... The normal 18 year old does not spend his time hacking ARM kernels because the normal 16 year old does not spend his time writing a static MIPS to X86 recompiler, because the normal 14 years old does not spend his time trying to understand how compilers and type inference algorithms work, and so on.

TL;DR: work on challenging stuff, rinse, repeat.
