my wii has actually stopped reading discs since last week
but thank god i had ripped them in 2020 cause i thought of trying to play them in my laptop will be better , but my laptop is way below the recommended specs and all games are unplayable

so i thought of homebrewing my wii and using usb loader gx..but i am afraid it might harm my wii

how long would my wii hardware last if i keep on playing via usb loader....will my wii work atleast 20 years

i dont want my wii to be bricked

Further how can I prevent my wii hardware from dying

So it wasn't unusual for early units shipping a new disc drive to have drive problems later in life. Early model GameCubes, PS1s, PS2s, etc are all known to have problems like this. And the Wii has it too. There are lots of techniques around for fixing it, though the most common option is to just buy a new console that was released after the fixes. In my case, I replaced the disc drive in my launch model Wii with one from a later (2011ish?) Wii, and have had zero problem since. The option I took of just buying a disc drive off the internet is probably not one you can do today, but theorectically you could transfer the drive from a newer unit, assuming they are compatible. But if you are buying a second, later Wii console, why not just use that one instead? ┐(´-｀)┌

Anyway just homebrew it. It will restore functionality to your Wii and other than the fan it has no more moving parts so your Wii should last basically forever. It's well after the age of crappy capacitors (poor 90s computers) and Wiis haven't exhibited any solder problems (poor launch PS3), so, it'll last for a long time. Probably anyway.

I find it amusing that the constant onslaught of disc drive problems in early units has finally been solved... by just not changing disc drives anymore. Like, our launch PS5's disc drive will probably never fail, because it's literally the exact same drive as what is in our PS4 Pro. There are no more problems to iron out! Not that there aren't other potential problems with launch units but, eh.

As far as I can they use different disc drives.  PS5 supports BDXL while the ps4p does not.  PS5 drive is 12x while ps4p is 6x.

Hmm, I remember someone in early teardowns saying they were the same. ....or maybe I'm thinking of the Xbox. That's probably it.

Yeah, it's the Xbox Series X that reuses the same disc drive from Xbox One S/X. PS5 definitely got a different disc drive since it supports BDXL, unlike the PS4 Pro.

To this day I still find this decision very puzzling, considering Sony is a major backer of the Blu-ray format and that the PS3 to this day still remain as one of the most popular Blu-ray Disc players AFAICT. That also means the PS4 Pro can't play Ultra HD Blu-ray discs even though it can stream 4k videos from Netflix and friends without breaking a sweat.

Also, the disc drive used both on PS4 and PS5 can reportedly read CDs just fine, those consoles not supporting playback of audio CDs seems to be just a software/firmware lock or some licensing fee that Sony decided to skip...

1: It is post count, the highest you can get is 7 stars and a gold name, I believe it requires 1,000 posts.
