Possible X86 build fix? Just tried 1451 X86 and it didn´t crash while booting games like most people said those builds did.

A little too late, I know^^ 04-24-2014, 11:20 AM
Hey guys, I was just curious if anyone would know this around here:
Why does PCSX2 require a BIOS? Dolphin uses HLE to get many of the primary functions of the wii done, correct (since you dont need a BIOS image or any other software ripped from a wii, with DSP LLE as an exception)? I know that the PS2 and the wii/gamecube are two different pieces of hardware, but I was just wondering if anyone knew, since i cant seem to find an answer from google (always seems to get flooded with tons of people looking downloads for them/links to get the BIOS itself and tutorials to get them). 04-24-2014, 11:33 AM

in a perfect world we would all be piles of sand with no ability to form coherent bodies of body

There could be various reasons. One is that people don't know enough of what the BIOS does in order to properly make a reliable high-level approach. It isn't always the case that the BIOS is as thoroughly understood as other components, hence it may be simpler to just have an emulator run the BIOS instead of trying to guess what the BIOS does or reverse-engineer it. Reverse-engineering the BIOS is not a trivial task either; the BIOS is a program in its own right. Another reason may be that the BIOS may be "more essential" to getting one console running in an emulator, that is to say, other components like the GPU, memory access, and etc may depend on functions stored in the BIOS or expect the BIOS to have set up something (say writing to a special area of memory with values that cannot easily be predicted, such as encrypted data or functions that can be called by other code). One console may rely on the BIOS to initialize a system to the point where games can boot, while others may not. It depends on what the BIOS is actually used for. Then you have reasons for why PCSX2 requires the BIOS like lack of interest among the developers in an HLE approach, lack of interest among users, forcing users to use the BIOS as a crude (and ineffective really) measure of anti-piracy, too much time for too little gain, not enough beer to do the coding, etc. The above is just a vast generalization. For specifics, you're better off actually asking the PCSX2 devs. I can only guess based on my personal experiences futzing around with the GB and GBC BIOS. 04-24-2014, 07:07 PM
That sounds like a fun project to work on though. Without having looked into the details I don't really see any technical reason that would make this impossible.

There's no point in doing that. No one will know as the BIOS from your PAL console is going to be exactly the same from another PAL console. Why even bother?
