H20, fantastic conversations we have on this thread.

The business is mostly in it's planning stages so almost nothing has been decided about what will be done, however it's highly likely they're going to build an actual pond, dug into the ground, the rainy season has just passed so no more rain but should we be worried if it comes back again next year?

(11-05-2013, 11:56 AM)NaturalViolence Wrote: Define "fishpond business". Equipment? Fish? Installation?

It's basically a fish farm, fishes will be brought in, bred and fished out then sold once they're adults, like i said the business is still in it's planning stages so nothing is decided yet, most of what i mentioned in my previous post were stuff i heard in conversations she was having with someone else, however if i'm involved in it (pretty sure i will), i'll try to keep you updated.

(11-05-2013, 11:56 AM)NaturalViolence Wrote: What exactly did the consultant say was wrong with the tap water?

She didn't say.

(11-05-2013, 11:56 AM)NaturalViolence Wrote: Your tap water would have to be very very poor quality for this to be the case. Which is why in developed countries it usually only ever happens with well water, not tap water.

Our tap water is clean and well treated (in the capital anyways). I didn't mention this in my last post but the consultant recommended Well or borehole water over tapwater, is this person an idiot? the person claims to be in the business (not sure whether presently or in the past).

Seriously, i don't know whether it's the media that is causing it (what am i saying, of course it is) but third world countries (mine anyways) are decently developed, at least in comparison to what i see of 'big countries' on the media. I don't watch much news anymore because of the utter bullshit that gets spouted there most of the time but when showing third world countries most of the time, they always show the worst secluded places instead of areas where human beings are actually living, which always pisses me off. I admit that unemployment and the poverty line are matters we still deal with but as far as lifestyle goes i believe we've gone much farther than what the media is feeding the world.

You can weatherproof everything outdoors. Though I would not recommend you do it the way I did:

What kind of soil do you have over there? Do you have anything bad that could wash into the pond during flooding from nearby? Roof runoff or fertilizer runoff from a field maybe?

Zee530 Wrote:She didn't say.

Well that's helpful. Ask her.

Perhaps, perhaps not. I don't know anything about your area or your water so it's hard to say. The most likely reason I can think of for someone to recommend well water is if either the tap water or of very poor quality or to avoid having to dechlorinating the water whenever doing a water change or water top off. Since you said that you have good quality tap water I'm guessing the latter. Do you have access to dechlorinators in your area? They will be sold as aquarium or pond water conditioners. The pond ones are far more concentrated and I highly recommend them over their aquarium counterparts. Example: http://www.amazon.com/PondCare-Chlorine-Heavy-Neutralizer-16-Ounce/dp/B000255N1E/ref=sr_1_1/180-3625413-3129361?ie=UTF8&qid=1383698464&sr=8-1&keywords=pond+dechlorinator

That $13 bottle treats 9,600 gallons. The dry forms (powder) are even more concentrated.

You cannot add any life to the pond until the chlorine is completely removed. Which takes awhile. Do you guys have droughts over there regularly? During the dry months you'll need to add new water regularly to the pond to replace any water lost from evaporation. You must do this one of two ways. Either directly into the pond or into a large bucket where you can dechlorinate it before adding it to the pond. I would highly recommend the latter. But the former is cheaper, faster, and easier. You can add it directly to the pond then dechlorinate as long as you don't add too much at one time. The tap has chlorine in it but it will mix with the pond water which will reduce the concentration down to safe levels as long as you're adding a very small amount of tap to a very large pond. The speed of evaporation and the size of the pond will determine whether this method is feasible. It's much better to replace a small amount of water every day or week then a large amount every week or month.

Again I must ask, how big is the pond going to be? This is really important.

And what's the Ph of your tap water? Ph test kits are cheap and widely available.

I haven't seen your country on the news, well, ever. You're right that it's usually some place out in the middle of nowhere. But that's because that tends to be where the news comes from. Most of the news we get regarding 3rd world countries is either about a war going on, a war we might enter, or a war that we're already involved in. Because unless it regards the military most Americans unfortunately do not care about other countries.

You're right that it depends on where you live specifically. But classification is based on statistical averages. "On average" you're worse off. So even if you have some developed cities where people have good living standards that isn't enough to bring your nations status up. Sucks doesn't it?

And yeah a lot of our news is utter bullshit too. 5 minutes of watching fox news at any random time of the day and you'll lose all remaining faith in humanity. Last night I saw them doing a segment on compact fluorescent lighting causing cancer.....I'm not even joking. "BREAKING NEWS AT 11. THIS NEW PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY IS DANGEROUS! WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW BY NOT WATCHING OUR STATION COULD KILL YOU! THEN AT 11:30 BARACK OBAMA REVEALS HE IS SATAN. WE TALK ABOUT HIS MUSLIM SOCIALIST ROOTS!". Nothing like watching fear mongering anchormen interviewing rednecks trying to talk about things they don't understand....

Garteal Wrote:Wow... isn't that a bit... too much? You're maintaining them all on your own right?

Yes. They're mostly self-sustaining as long as you invest enough money into proper filtration. If I wanted to spend even more and make them even uglier I could add an auto-top off system with a float valve. That would save me even more time. And an automated feeding system.

Edit:
The gorgonian just finished its first molting so it's in full bloom right now. I snapped some pictures this morning. The camera seems to have troubled not focusing on the glass so they're not quite as good as I would like:

I got some scarlet hermit crabs to eat the hair algae. They're barely eating any.... I either need to get more or try my luck with snails. Identifying coral/anemone species is really hard. A lot of them will have identical appearances except at the cellular level.

Not only am I getting unlucky finding a low latency internet provider where I recently moved; now my main system is offline as both motherboards are completely shot. Decided I am going to sell off my i7 950, one GTX 460 and my Asus 25.5" monitor to put towards a new Haswell i7 cpu and motherboard. Eventually I may upgrade graphics to a current gen solution as well as memory but my focus is getting my system running again,

Does anyone know how Haswell performs with Dolphin and demanding games? What would be the highest stable clock I could achieve on air while maintaining decent idle and load temps?
