Because I really like linux. Unfortunately I can't cut all of my ties to windows because their are too many awesome applications that are only available on windows including just about every AAA game.
I genuinely want to see linux and open source applications crush microsoft and all of their products into a fine paste. Yet I have practically no choice but to support them, which makes me part of the problem. Something I want to rid myself of.
Quote:Fwiw, I've heard that the Windows Steam client runs very well with WINE along with a large number of games.
That depends on your definition of large. WINE has improved a lot since I first used it but it's still far from where it needs to be for someone who spends lots of money on video games every year to take it seriously. It can't run dx10+ games. And from what I can tell most dx9c games still can't be run. It gives ridiculously stupid error messages and after days of trying to figure it out you just give up. I don't want to fool around trying to get my software to work. It should just work.
This is not the solution. The solution is to get devs to actually design their games with linux in mind, not have the linux community try to hackfix their way out of everything.
Quote:You may have a point about doubting the true arrival of AAA games on Linux. Steam's been available for OS X for a while, and so has the Mac App Store; devs have viable distrubution platforms there. Still, I don't hear a peep about hot-new games coming to OS X, but then again it's not as if I'm listening intently to begin with.
Sigh.....
