Yo, DefenderX, guess what I got to see at my job today. Yup, a couple of iMacs and some of those Thunderbolt displays. Well, since I work in shipping, I only really got to see them in boxes (big boxes mind you, those Thunderbolt displays are huge). I think the picture on the side showing OS X in action was 1:1 too. Not the first time I've handled Macs on the job, but I thought about how you'd react if you saw those Apple products in front of you :p

I made waaaaay to many obligations on these forums. I have to retest my CPU benchmark for Starscream, test Twilight Princess for rpglord, start a list on the widescreen hack and who knows what other crap I signed up for.
I guess I'll get it done this weekend.

OS: Windows 7 64 bit CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K @ 4.4 GHz GPU: EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti (Factory OC'ed) RAM: 16 GB @ 1600 MHz Dolphin Revision:3.0, 3.0-784, 3.5, latest 3.5 10-20-2012, 03:22 PM
You think you have obligations to this place? I still haven't finished my "minimum specs - video card" thread (which is almost a year old now if I recall) or my "cpu microarchitecture hierarchy thread" (a couple of months old now).
I just started working on the latter again: http://forums.dolphin-emu.org/showthread...#pid229655 Started writing a glossary of terms.....and it turned into a god damn dictionary. I had to stop myself. This is the problem I always run into it. I like to explain the concepts instead of just presenting the "big picture" and making a thread that is useful to most readers. Basically it started as an effort to rank microarchitectures and quickly evolved into the idea of writing a thread about microarchitectures. I started off with words that you need to know/use to differentiate microarchitectures and it just went from there.
"Normally if given a choice between doing something and nothing, I’d choose to do nothing. But I would do something if it helps someone else do nothing. I’d work all night if it meant nothing got done."

Speaking of the minimum video specs thread, shouldn't you put the 7000 series and 600 series performance?
Or do we not have enough data about how powerful they are?
Those threads are already pretty complete to me. They have almost all of the info necessary I the average user. Some stuff needs tweaking (550 Ti should be under 3x IR IMO since the IR can range from 2x to 4x depending on the game), but the list definitely gives a good enough representation of GPUs, and the CPU list gives an excellent representation of CPUs when used in combo with the FAQ on the new site.
Ah, the architecture list does need some work. Don't kill yourself on that one. It will take forever. Just link people to a text book online if they really need to learn why certain microarchitectures may be better than others for Dolphin. Then just explain that Ivy Bridge is the third core i3/i5/i7 microarchitecture and that models usually look like iX-3XXX.

No textbook will be able to adequately explain it the way I can since I can directly tie everything together using dolphin benchmarks. Quote:Then just explain that Ivy Bridge is the third core i3/i5/i7 microarchitecture and that models usually look like iX-3XXX. Technically it's not a microarchitecture it's just a die shrink. Sandy bridge is still the microarchitecture. Look at the image that I posted: This came from Intel themselves. Quote: Speaking of the minimum video specs thread, shouldn't you put the 7000 series and 600 series performance? Oh goodie, more work for me: And no we don't have any performance data about them so I'll just have to make my best guess as usual. Quote:550 Ti should be under 3x IR IMO since the IR can range from 2x to 4x depending on the game If that's the case then it should be under 2x IR since that's the worst case scenario which is what the list is all about.

Don't be technical. Just say some really basic crap like "An Ivy Bridge CPU @ 3 GHz is faster than a Sandy Bridge CPU @ 3 GHz."
And yes, Ivy Bridge is just a die shrink. For the common user they still think f it as a new architecture even though the specifications are the same. Think like an idiot and maybe you can help some. The worst case scenario for my 550 Ti if you really want to go there is 1x for a particular animation/lighting/fog combo in Super Mario Strikers

Quote:Think like an idiot That's really hard for me to do. "How would I say this if I didn't know about X?" is often a very difficult question to answer. And stated something incorrect only makes the problems that I'm fighting against worse. There aren't enough perfectionists in the world. Plus I can't bring myself to use incorrect terminology or allow others to use incorrect terminology, it just bugs me, a lot. Intel sometimes refers to Ivy bridge as a microarchitecture and sometimes refers to it as "just a die shrink of the sandy bridge microarchtecture". Even they aren't consistent about their use of the word. And their marketing department takes the perfectly logical classification system that the engineers use (which we rarely get a glimpse of) and completely fucks it up. Which makes it really hard to categorize everything appropriately. I wish I could start my own system and have it adopted as an industry wide standard. The original three digit CPUID system used by P6 was a good example of how it should be done. First digit microarchitecture, second digit family, third digit model. Concise and effective. Although you would run out of digits pretty fast and so you would need to implement something similar but with more digits (which they did but also made it less concise in the process). Quote:The worst case scenario for my 550 Ti if you really want to go there is 1x for a particular animation/lighting/fog combo in Super Mario Strikers I would exclude that if it's only one game.

That's why I bought a Macbook (Pro). I don't have place for such a big screen. 10-21-2012, 06:01 AM
@NV 3.0-784 just gave me a monstrous speed up in Super Mario Galaxy, so my 550 Ti is a 4x card. Before I got about 60 FPS on 2x IR, now I get consistently about 70 on 3x. Blowing my mind right now.
