Agree . Though i could list a bunch of 4.0 inch smartphone that use 1280x720 res
720p is the most common display resolutions , 1136x640 is so gay (need converting)
Not even to mention the nano-sim...
Btw, would you buy it ? Just curious

I admit Macbook Pro Retina is not an overpriced product but iphone 5 is

The MP rating of the camera is the same, but once you're past 3.5 MP the lens becomes more important that extra megapixels, and the lens is certainly better. Also, it's ground from sapphire crystal, so it's harder to damage (photos with a scratched lens look bad) and is less sensitive to temperature variation. Also sapphire crystal resists rocket attack, so it gives bragging rights.

Regardless of what Apple say, this is the iPhone 6, and I still struggle not to call the 4S the 5, as it is ~2x as powerful as the iPhone 4, and the camera is a tonne better. The new iPhone is ~2x as powerful as the 4S again, and has a tonne of other improvements (most of which I wouldn't notice).

The closest equivalents to the iPhone 5 cost ~£450, and the iPhone is ~£600, a 133% markup for being apple. The closest equivalents to a Macbook Pro Retina cost ~£1000, and the Macbook costs £2299, a 229% markup. Which one is overpriced?

I would buy it, but only because the bigger Android phones just don't fit in my hand as well. Are there any good android phones with similar width that will give me the same speed and features? Having a good (and free) N64 and GBA emulator on my phone would be awesome Cool afaik the iPhone, even when jail broken, doesn't offer any of that for free. I could be wrong though.

Free GBA emulator? No. Free N64 emulator? Yes. At least, this was true the last time I checked on Cydia. My 2nd Gen iPod Touch is too old and weak to try out the N64 emulator.

Sorry, I couldn't help it. Here these will cheer you up: http://www.talltaleradio.com/booksmarts-english-major-hell/

garrlker Wrote:Sorry. What I meant is, when you went off somewhere else, living on a campus away from your family, meeting new people, and having a whole new experience compared to "traditional" school, what were your feelings on it? Scared, nervous, love it, hate it?

I'll say this is the most straight forward way I can think of. Asking what college is like is like asking what life is like. It's completely different for everyone and the experiences that one person had will probably not be applicable to other people.

With that said the closest question you can ask that one can accurately answer is "what was is like for you?" which is what you have now asked. I remember being scared shitless the first month. I had absolutely no clue what I was doing all the time. I just tried my best to do whatever people told me to do until I eventually got used to everything through experience. If your parents coddled you throughout your life then this is the time when you will learn how to live on your own. I met some students that had seriously (I promise I'm not making this up) never done their laundry themselves before in their entire life and had no idea how to do it. I literally had to teach one girl how to do laundry (you can tell I went to a college with a lot of students from upper class and upper middle class families). Others pretty much already had the skillsets they needed since their parents had them manage their own lives so this was a natural and painless transition for those people. The college I went to was one that none of my friends from high school went to so I basically had to start all over again. As a result I was depressed and lonely for quite some time. Luckily my roommate (I lived in a dorm my first year, he was chosen randomly of course) was the social type and practically forced me to meet new people. He was a great guy and really helped me through those first few months. However you might not be so lucky. Some roommates are great, and some suck. If you live in a dorm you either get lucky or don't. I would recommend finding an apartment near campus after your first year if you can, like I did. They're cheaper, bigger, and have much less restrictions (for example you can have a stove in an apartment, but not in a dorm) but they do provide less opportunity for meeting new people/other students and they're further away from campus so you will almost definitely need a car.

garrlker Wrote:How hard is it(I know that could be college dependent)?

School?
Major?
Professors?
Friends?

Like Shonumi said there are so many factors that massively scale the difficulty that it's impossible to tell.

garrlker Wrote:And if someone got there on a athletic scholarship, I'd like to hear bout your experiences too. An athletic scholarship is what will probably get me to college.

That's going to be tough. Good luck with that.

Yeah, your first two years didn't sound that great. And, thats' how I was thinking about doing it, getting my basic out at the local college, then heading off. Depends on what scholarships I get whether I'l be able too. And I might be heading into physical therapy with some kind of computer degree as a minor or, as it would be in my case, the "backup plan". That's just in case I were to finish the health science college courses for PTA,graduate, and a PTA school didn't accept me. That's a possibility because a good PTA school around here only accepts 15 students every 2 years, and besides this school I'd have to go far off to find another one that would be as good of a school. So... it's a risk.

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you.

I beg to differ.

Unless you're retarted and hold the screen like 1cm away from your eyes that's true

I plan to use my amazing English skills to write shitty novels that will sell for big bucks (Twilight, 50 Shades, the list goes on and gets worse). Start selling on Amazon then get picked up by a major publisher, then I win. Everything. Cool

I haven't actually been looking for jobs, because I need to update my resume (but editing PDFs is not a friendly task, even with Acrobat Pro). I need to convert it to HTML for the future. My current part-time job pays ridiculously well, so there's not a big rush to put my degree to use :p I'm in "take it easy mode" for now.

I appreciated the link btw, I'm saving a couple of those pics Smile

Well, let's do some math.

Assume s = the distance between the center of two adjacent pixels, d = distance between the user's eye and the screen, and a = the measurement of the angle created by drawing two lines from the user's eye to the two pixels mentioned previously.

Also understand that it is assumed and accepted by most academics who study the matter that the resolution (not as in l x w, but as in the ability to resolve) of the human eye is about one arcminute for people with 20/20 vision. The equation for the size of an object as seen in the human retina can be found with the equation:

tan(a/2) = s/(2d).

Assuming the average user holds their smartphone 11 in away from their face and s = 1/326 in, we have

tan(a/2) = 1/[326(2*11)]
tan(a/2) = 1/7172
a/2 = arctan(1/7172)
a = 2arctan(1/7172)
a ~= .9586577659 arcminutes
< 1 arcminute
therefore the display on the iPhone 4, 4s, and 5 is a Retina display for users with 20/20 vision who hold their phone 11 or more inches away from ther face.

Of course, maybe you hold your phone ridiculously close to your face or your vision is better than 20/20. I can't decide that. But the term retina nonetheless holds for the average user.

All I know is I continue to see improvement as screen resolution on smart phones continues to increase, despite everyone telling me otherwise. When I no longer see any difference from an increase in resolution and/or DPI then I will stop wanting higher resolution phones. But I haven't hit that point yet.

Edit: And yes I do have better than 20/20 vision.

As I said at the end of my post, you are probably just holding the phones closer to your eyes than 11 in or your eyesight is better than 20/20 (which is always possible). Almost no manufacturer will want to cater too much to that audience though, so don't be too surprised if phone DPI doesn't move much above 350 ppi. Most Android phones have a lesser DPI than the iPhone, so if you are using Android phones for your testing that could also be the culprit. For holding the phone 11 in away from your face, you get these values for "percentage of Retina resolution":

Nokia Lumia 920: 106.23% w/ 332 ppi and a 4.5" screen
iPhone 5: 104.31% w/ 326 ppi a 4" screen
HTC One X: 99.83% w/ 312 ppi and a 4.7" screen
Galaxy S III: 97.91% w/ 306 ppi and a 4.8" screen

So basically the top Windows Phone 8 device trumps everyone on the list, while the iPhone comes in a fairly close second and the One X and S III are just a notch below retina resolution. Not that it really matters, though, because with the bigger screen I would suspect users are more likely to hold the phone further away from their face, thus causing the "percentage of Retina resolution" to rise.
