We have a soldering iron that's supposedly really high end, but it doesn't get hot enough to melt lead-free solder (which it's manual recommends using), the tip keeps de-tinning itself, and the cable doesn't like being straight, so a few times when it's been put in its stand it's jumped out again and tried to put a nice red line of burn down my arm.
We also have a low end solder gun which is basically a soldering iron, but shaped like a large hairdryer, and with a tip the size of a large flathead screwdriver. Theoretically, this should only be good for very rough soldering on large objects, for example soldering a piece of cable onto another piece of cable that's being suspended off a pylon taking power from the power station to its users homes a hundred miles away. Guess which of these turned out to be easier to use to solder a new capacitor into a router a few months ago where I had to match the precision of a robot in China?

And so commences a week of constantly accidentally writing /13 in the date column on every form......

And so commences another school free week.
Wait... you're still using a pen in your classes? We do everything digitally. Well, 98% of it. 01-02-2014, 02:40 AM
Only if you're doing ridiculous overclocking and want to invest time in a custom loop.

And if you consider $300 worth it for a 5-10% boost in cpu performance.
