I used to think that DDR3 was only a very little improvement on DDR2, since in most of memory benches there isn't much difference between "good" DDR2 and DDR3.
Just like having a cpu with more than 3 cores in 99% of applications it makes no difference. However in some applications, such as this one, it makes a big difference (depending on what settings you're using). Also the IMC plays a huge role in memory bandiwdth not just the ram you are using.
