I've tested with SMG 1 (I believe it's the same behavior), with PAL60 unchecked, I got 60 FPS and 50 VPS.
From France with love.

Same here, 60fps/50vps with galaxy 2. I didn't notice the VPS (had it set to fullscreen). Punch Out will run at 50fps/50vps however. I take it that VPS is what the game is actually running at? If there is not going to be any benefit by using 50hz then ill just keep pal60 enabled.

Yes, or more specifically, the VPS is the frame rate that the game's video output is running at. It's possible (but uncommon) for the FPS to be higher than the VPS if the game skips displaying some frames that it renders, and it's possible (and common) for the FPS to be lower than the VPS if the game displays some rendered frames more than one time.

Maybe this means that even with PAL50 SMG is running at 60FPS (inside the hardware) and then displays at 50 FPS (so 10 frames are dropped).

Edit : you were faster than me JosJuice :p

It runs smooth though, no jumps, skips, etc so you wouldn't know it.

Any program running on a gamecube or wii can override the system video mode, and set any video mode it wants. Specifically, if a game only wants to run in 60 Hz mode, it can just switch to that mode, even if 50 Hz mode is selected.

Also, like JMC said, there is no speed boost by running in 50 Hz mode instead of 60 Hz mode.
