sorry, playing from an original disc is not possible. Playing from a dvd drive will only work with a backup burnt to disc.
see my post here for more information

Yeah I have the original and the backup, neither work. What could be wrong with the backup?

the gcm/iso was burnt as a file instead of a disc image would certainly cause this error, open the drive using windows explorer D: (or whatever your drive is labeled) is there a file showing on the disc?
if that is not the case,
does the backup work on a wii? what program was used to burn the iso as a disc image? can you compare the backup with the disc image file in a hex editor?
does dolphin show the game in the gamelist (with View > Show drives checked)?

0 size is expected for a drive.
You could try the new DVD integrity check from the iso properties window, added by 77f47866dfb4 (3.0-629). I haven't personally tested it on a disc backup so I don't have any estimate on how long it would take.

Does the backup also give the invalid file error or another error, or does it just boot to a blank screen?
If there is an error, what is it?
How long are you waiting for it to boot? it takes longer to start up from a backup disc than running directly from a file on the hard drive

right click the game in the gamelist, choose properties.
In the Filesystem tab rightclick the data partition and choose check partition integrity
