Problems with the skylanders portal

I've decided to look back at some of the games I've played when I was younger, one such being Skylanders swap force. I have my copy dumped and my portal hooked up via the USB passthrough, and as soon as I get into any of the menus, the game starts flashing every other frame saying that the portal has been disconnected, and it seriously chugs the frame rate down. I have messed with some settings, both graphic and general stuff just to see if I may have enabled some settings that mess with how the game takes USB devices. I'm kinda new to dolphin and don't have the best technical know-how to really understand half of the settings. thanks in advance.
