I just now updated to stable 4.0 from 3.5 on Linux, and am receiving a pretty massive performance hit using all of the same settings. Is there a reason why this could be happening?

Pretty big slowdown since updating to 4.0

You haven't told us which games you're playing and what those "same settings" were. 3.5 used Nvidia Cg as opposed to GLSL in 4.0. For OpenGL users with Nvidia GPUs, it's advised that you enable Vertex Streaming Hack (Graphics -> Hacks tab). Also, if you're using open source drivers for Nvidia on Linux (noveau or whatever it's called) you're advised to use the proprietary drivers instead.

Okay, thanks I'll try that. I was just wondering if there were any major changes such as what you just mentioned that changed that would cause it. And yeah, I am using proprietary drivers.
If those things don't help I will post more information, thank you.
My settings and two quick (and uncropped, sorry) screencaps are here http://imgur.com/a/GgyOe . The main game in question is Twilight Princess (GCN version), though Wind Waker is experiencing slowdown as well.
I changed no settings before or after updating from 3.5 to 4.0, and I was able to max around 120% speed in the same area in TP on 3.5 where I am now getting ~80%. Changing IR to 1x, AA off, and AF 1x gets me to about the same performance I had before, with an obvious major difference in visuals. I get a stable 100% on TWW on 3.5, but on 4.0 I drop to about 25 fps when there are two enemies on screen, and get spikes when striking them or being hit by them. All of my other games are running 100% with no noticeable slowdown, but I haven't benchmarked them. 09-23-2013, 04:55 PM
Um, actually, I guess I'm stupid and it must have been something to do with my system. Weird that 3.5 wasn't affected by whatever was bringing down performance in 4.0 at the time, but 4.0 is running on par with 3.5 for me now.
Sorry, thank you for the response! 09-25-2013, 11:23 AM
Actually, I'm just kidding, I have no idea what it is anymore. I open dolphin immediately after a fresh boot and still only run at about 80%. Maxing IR, AA, and AF hardly have an effect on performance, it's equally as bad as when I set them all as low as possible.
I have no idea how I got it to run properly that one time, but I can't seem to recreate it. Also, I just updated my gfx drivers to 319.49, so I don't think it's a video driver issue. My system reports dolphin as using only ~20% cpu, so I don't think it's my hardware either. Sorry for necroing the thread so soon, but I'm at a loss at what to try next. Maybe I'll just have to downgrade to 3.5 and use that, though I'd really really rather not. Thanks again 09-25-2013, 12:18 PM
Operating System: Ubuntu Linux 13.04 x64
Processor/CPU: Intel i7-2600 Video Card/GPU: NVidia GTX 570 Memory/RAM: 8gb don't remember what brand It's moreso the fact that it's running worse than 3.5 which is troubling me than just the fact that it's running poorly. If it always ran this bad, I'd just accept it. But I think my hardware can handle it, even though my gpu is getting pretty outdated. 09-25-2013, 12:24 PM
I wouldn't expect that big of a performance decrease. It could be related to the GLSL merge. Can you find that revision (just before) and test?
