Hi there, so I just purchased the OnePlus 5T, with the Snapdragon 835 CPU and Adreno 540 GPU and 6GB of ram.

However, dolphin isn't performing as well even on Vulkan - games like Super Mario Bros or Pikmin 2 are running at half speed, even at 1x resolution. I've updateded my phone to the latest Android available; Android 8.1.0 and Oxygen OS 5.1.4.

Are there any drivers I need to update, or somehow install Vulkan support for my phone?

Here are my settings: https://imgur.com/a/iWI99NH

Cheers, also notice I'm brand new to Android - after using an iPhone 5 for the last 4-5 years!!

If you want the best possible performance, you'll need to root your phone and lock your phone's CPU clock to max. If you use the Vulkan backend and see graphics then your phone supports Vulkan.

I have a One Plus 5, and Super Mario Sunshine (I assume that's the Mario game you're talking about?) doesn't run that well due to it using a lot of feature that are slow to emulate, but Pikmin 2 should run relatively well. Does the performance change if you keep your finger on the screen?

No, I was talking about New Super Mario Bros Wii.

A little bit, but not really. Could you provide a guide/link if possible, on how to root my phone?

Okay, thanks for info. Yes I know, I meant the latest my phone could support.

Edit: Apparently my phone can support Android 9.0. Would it help performance maybe?

Android 9 may help performance a bit, the new line of drivers is pretty nice.

I'm not looking to update to android 9, I'm sticking with Android 8. I've found this - you can underclock and overclock the cpu. Would it be good?

https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/development/kernel-elementalx-op5t-1-00-oxygenos-t3724179

I have zero experience in rooting/overclocking android.

EDIT: The main thing I'm looking here is to have the ability to toggle overclocking my CPU (as it's stuck on 1.9ghz out of the box, not 2.45ghz which is the Snapdragon 835's max speed). All I'm asking for is a tutorial in how to safely root/overclock my phone so I can have a better experience with dolphin. Cheers for you guys help.  Big Grin

The first lesson is that none of this is safe. Not that you can’t do it, but understand that any kind of modification like this can leave you with a brick (especially if you are inexperienced, i’ve learned this lesson before many times). Bearing that in mind, a governor that sticks more doggedly to 2.45Ghz would be ideal. Overclocking is a pipe dream tbh, you don’t have the cooling overhead for something like that and device stability on newer QC SoC’s is questionable (even qualcomm’s Official S821 clocks were unstable on the 3T). Undervolting is a real possibility, and can make thermals better, but it’s a lottery and also long term will likely reduce the life span of your device.

Don’t focus on kernels or roms that promise a million different changes and whatever to enhance UI or debloat or whatever. None of that affects dolphin, like literally 0. The governor and thermal parameters are the only thing that actually changes dolphin performance. You only really need a kernel for that but you may opt for a full custom rom if you want better integration with the kernel features.

The first step is to unlock the bootloader (which wipes your phone). Then head onto those forums and follow their instructions word for word. You will need google’s Adb/fastboot toolkit installed on your PC (any OS except chrome OS will do). Beyond that, xda offers proper instructions, and i’m not gonna outline every step just because they already do and this isn’t xda.

I soft bricked my phone doing unlocking/rooting and had to use a dodgy program from a VM to factory reset it. You can either accept that the One Plus 5 isn't perfect for GameCube/Wii emulation (but will run some games fairly well even at stock), or, you can do that 20% overclock, get way better performance, but risk potentially bricking the phone.

If you want best performance, you need the Android 9 drivers as the Vulkan driver is much improved.

Right - I think the best option for me is to upgrade to Android 9 - seeing how risky it is too root and overclock your phone.
My only concern is the apparent battery issues people have been having on the 5T and varrious other phones compared to Android 8 - for everyday use.

Cheers for you guys help.
