Well you said it was for the build and made no mention of that other stuff. So now I have to ask again. How much is your budget for the build?
I did say that I was replacing everything, didn't I? I guess most people wouldn't think desk, chair, controller, audio stuff, and adapters, but I still mentioned them really broadly.

kinkinkijkin Wrote:Actually, this problem is rather specific. I am set up in a stone basement, in one of the most humid cities in all of North America. The fact that it's in Canada makes the humidity cause you to be extremely cold when it's not the summer time.

Install a heater. Cooling is hard, heating is easy.
Now, I know you never could have known this without me saying it before, but, because of the fact that my wifi card is dying at an ever-speeding pace, I have to have my desk directly below the router. Unfortunately, there's no power outlet right here, and, in fact, there's not on anywhere near this placement. So, I have to run an extension cord down through a vent from the living room, over to my desk. And then, once it gets there, it has to go through a really old power bar into a computer, a screen, a tv (which is right by my desk, other people in the house use it), a MIDI keyboard, and a really old pair of speakers that I'm using as a headphone amp. Adding a heater would amplify the danger, if one of our extremely playful dogs ever bumps the plug upstairs.

kinkinkijkin Wrote:This is going to sound VERY stupid, and I understand exactly why, so you don't need to comment on this, but, I want to have an SFF Intel-NVidia build and an LFF AMD-AMD build. Unfortunately, I'm stuck in this mindset, and might only change that when I go to actually buy the parts.

I hate when you're right. That does sound very stupid. And of course I'm going to comment on this! You admiting that it's a dumb idea only further illustrates that it's irrational and therefore worth mentioning.
Good to know that we're on the same page about this.

Then why write it? What did you mean to write?
I don't really know. Maybe I was saying something along the lines of bookmarking different points in making this list, or maybe that I'd start by pretending I have a really low budget, but I can't be sure of it.

It's really not that much harder to move an ATX build than a micro-atx/mini-itx build. Unless you're constantly moving it I would advice against constraining yourself to a small build.
Well, I also use my desk as a table for everything, and I want to move away from using a separate, smaller table to hold my computer. In getting a new desk, I have to get a smaller one (area restrictions where I'm moving the stuff when I buy the new desk), and I can already hardly fit two meals, a coffee, my disk binders, and my screens* on this desk. Also, I enjoy the novelty of having a small computer.

* = sometimes, when I need to do more multitasking than 1080p is designed for, I brave the flickering and put one of my other screens on my desk and use it as well

I would aim for double that if you can. Modern parts generally use more electricity than parts from that era.
At this point, I'd either have to get a really powerful GPU or multiple GPUs to double that, really.

4:3/5:4 I can understand. But 16:9 is only a 10% reduction in height from 16:10 and no reduction in width. How did you test this exactly? The monitor size likely played a bigger role in your test than the AR.
My current screen is slightly larger than normal. If I go to a normal-sized 1920x1200 screen, I will have a reduction in size from the edges instead of an increase of vertical size.

Ok but that would be the rationale thing to do.
Rationality is for people who didn't become obsessed with a show meant for little girls, join multiple communities surrounding it, lie about every aspect of his life for attention, think everyone loves him, have a mental breakdown when he realized they didn't, rageleave all of those communities, rejoin pretending to be a german-american girl who cannot understand spoken english but who understands written english, and then start a big thing pretending that people had purchased his name for use.

kinkinkijkin Wrote:It gets hot here in the summer. I've seen this poor CPU go from loading 29c to idling 35c in the summertime, so it's a bit of a concern for higher-end hardware.

1. Your current cpu when overclocked has a much higher TDP than this one.
2. Your cooling is probably not that great.

Unless your ambient temperature is 150+ F (65+ C) a haswell desktop cpu should not be overheating at stock settings. If you really want to be sure just get a good cooler for it. You easily have the money for one.
My CPU, when overclocked, has a TDP of 72w. The humidity can do wonders to choke up a fan.

I don't know what that's supposed to mean but I'm willing to bet you're still not going to change your mind on this one.
You're right, I'm probably, not, but you never know. Actually, I do know. I'll probably end up changing my mind when I go to buy the stuff. Hell, knowing me, I'll probably end up instantly converting to XL-ATX with two R9 290s, four Raptors in raid 10, and an 80+ Silver 1000w power supply.
in a perfect world we would all be piles of sand with no ability to form coherent bodies of body
