So I am looking at building a HTPC / Dolphin machine I am wondering how far the Pentium G3258 will need to be pushed to not be the bottleneck for dolphin if it can even do it at all.
I understand the single core performance is the key to running Dolphin so a G3258 could be an excellent platform given it apparently takes to water like a duck. I have seen many overclocks exceeding 4.5 Ghz. Is this going to be something we can pair with a low end GPU and have a cheap but fast Dolphin doing 1080P.

It should be more than enough for almost all playable games, once it's overclocked to around 4.5 GHz, which is achievable with the stock cooler. You also wouldn't have to spend a huge amount to play in 1080p, provided you're fine without antialiasing.

Seriously though, we should stop saying this. It's not a smart idea. Get an aftermarket cooler for 30 bucks.

The only issue with it in this case is the noise. It only needs to dissipate about 50W of heat, and most aftermarket coolers are designed to cope with over 200W, whereas Intel's stock cooler is designed for about 80W. They're both adequate, but one costs more and is quieter.

Forgive my ignorance but isn't the G3258 a very old processor? How can it be able to handle most games and perform better than newer cpus?

Nope, it is a Haswell-series Pentium released in celebration of Pentium's 20th anniversary

Because its still part of the Pentium line and has similar characteristics to every other Pentium in the Haswell line just as it should.

Only difference is that its unlocked.

Oh okay I get it, will it be worth it to get one over the 3570k I have right now and OC it to 4.5GHz? Probably not
