What about the blu-ray burner and SSD?

I highly doubt that there is any objective evidence that the asus maximus VI extreme will last any longer than your currently selected board.

16GB of ram will be unnecessary for at least a few years possibly longer but if you're dead set on it go with 2x8GB for sure. It provides an upgrade path to 32GB and it's slightly cheaper. There are many good brands to choose from so just get one that's well rated, cheap, and has short heatsinks (so you can fit that massive HSF in there).

As far as monitors go in addition to the korean options for higher resolution you might also be interested in the 29" 2560 x 1080 ultra wide options for around $450:

Sockets LGA2011 (Intel xeon and i7 extreme), LGA1567 (Intel xeon), and G34 (AMD Opteron) all support it. So outside of servers the only way to get a quad channel ram setup right now is to get an Intel LGA2011 motherboard with a sandy bridge-E or ivy bridge-E cpu.

RachelB Wrote:Also, they DO have a warranty, but since you'd have to pay shipping, and probably get someone who speaks korean to translate for you, it may not be worth the hassle.

RachelB Wrote:Depends on the seller. The one i bought from would replace it (for free) if there was more than 1 dead pixel in the middle, or 5 anywhere else. Most also offer an option to guarantee none for a bit more ($30-50 i think at the time, but dead pixels weren't that common, so i didn't bother).

You're slowly convincing me to get one. But even if I managed to sell my current monitor and get say $100 for it I would still be looking at spending another $300-350 to get one of these things with a perfect pixel guarantee. I could upgrade my cpu and motherboard or video card for that much money. And then if it developed any dead pixels or bright/dark spots I would have to throw it out the window and begin praising satan for a job well done. There is hope of American manufacturers (yes I know they don't actually do the manufacturing in America) lowering their prices though: http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/acer_k272hul_27_inch_wqhd_monitor.html

$450 (only $50 more than most korean options are right now) and it's just around the corner.

Honestly, i think it's the best purchase i've ever made. I wish i had the money for a second one.

Sometime in the last few months i got 1 dead pixel, and i can't even see it except on a pure black screen, no matter how hard i look for it. You'd need a whole bunch of them right next to each other for it to possibly not be significantly better than some crappy 1080p monitor.

So I lowered my DRAM to 8gbs since I figured I'll probably never use more than 6gbs. As for the ODD, it's only a $30+ for a Blu-ray writer which I don't mind spending. Lowered HDD from 4tb to 2tb and added some case fans. Now I'm stumped as to which motherboard would be better in terms of performance in OC. I've decided not to get an MSI so I am stuck between the Asus Hero and the Gigabyte UD4H. Or maybe I should just stay with the Asus Pro which has WIFI + Bluetooth. Still need to look into a monitor with 1440p IPS 27+'' that won't cost more than $400.

Your motherboard won't have any effect on your overclocking potential. Haswell uses an integrated VRM. Pretty much every Z87 board caps out at around 4.3GHz with it. I would recommend running wifi and BT through standalone adapters rather than getting a motherboard with them built in. As for monitors imported korean monitors are the only way to get those specs at that price. Both newegg and amazon sell them.

Hopefully I don't change it again. Still on the hunt for a good monitor.

Edit: Will these suffice? And what are the differences ???

The first link is the "pixel perfect" version. An extra $50 for a guarantee that the product has three or less dead pixels on arrival.

Were all those fans really necessary?

Not sure if $50 is really worth not having a few dead pixels. Might as well buy a better quality monitor.

A got a fan for every extra slot the chassis offered. The 2 empty slots on the top and the front would have been enough but I want extra ventilation inside to keep things extra cool.

If you care about fans, you might want to give these a thought.

I don't have them myself, however I once wanted to upgrade my case fans and spent quite a while researching. I came to the conclusion that those are very quiet, while having a great airflow, and excellent quality. Although they do come with an extra 7 bucks per fan price tag compared to the ones you're getting now.

Very few fans can beat a noctua SSO fan in efficiency (noise vs. airflow), warranty (6 years), and build quality. However they are also one of the most expensive brands on the market. Often triple the price of competitors. And I really don't think that level of quality is necessary with case fans. I've been using generic low budget fans my whole life and have never even encountered one break or give me noise issues.

Well, 20 bucks instead of 13 isn't triple, but rather about 50% more expensive.

Personally, I've never added fans to my case beyond the default ones, and I've never needed more. Although I've only ever had one rig, and that for less than a year, so maybe I'm not the most experienced person in these matters.
