Has anyone had any success getting this game to work past the inital cutscene?

Have you verified your iso in dolphin. Assuming you using recent build and not stable you can go into game properties and there should be a tab for verification. Also you setting should be a default except maybe internal resolution and ubershaders. If you using dolphin 5 or older you should also update to the current beta or dev builds.
