Have a crazy massive haul in the works which should be uploaded sometime soon. Great to see the progress from everyone.

I've assembled Peach's dress on the hanger for the shower scene, less busywork for the rest of you! I also upscaled some seamless textures with Waifu2x using BigHead's PS script. Any thoughts on the strange pictures of Peach? Do the pictures of princess peach in the obsessed fan's house in Petalburg look so bizarre on console too? Maybe they're supposed to be impressionist. I'm also wondering if the waifu2x upscales of the maps are good enough. They do blur the grain a bit but smooth lots of jagged edges, especially the map lines. There's some nasty compression artifacts that get baked in the sky though. Maybe it's a good tradeoff? I'm playing through the game on Dolphin in 4k with this texture pack for the first time and loving it! I'm amazed by the full retextures in this pack! I wish I had revisited this game sooner! I beat the game as a kid but despite many attempts I never got to the bottom of the pit of 100 trials (which I suspect will be easier as a 21 year old).
As a temporary solution, the jury is still out on waifu2x being a good solution. Even if they were added, they're certainly not suitable for long-term, and would have to be replaced eventually.
On a different note, I should have my pack ready to go sometime this week. Some work-related business kept me from giving it my full attention, but that should mostly be resolved now. EDIT: Note to self. NEVER make deadlines again. I swear every time I do I'm cursed with a lack of time. 03-07-2018, 08:43 AM

Yes I agree, the waifu2x maps should only be a temporary solution, although retexturing the entire map and it's variations would be quite a task. Can't wait to see your new textures! 03-08-2018, 11:24 PM

I know it is kind of an old post but I do want to mention this: The texture packs only seem to have any effect above 1xIR, they do get loaded but since it is Native resolution the game will still look as blocky as it has always been because it will keep the resolution of 480p.

If you made some changes by hand drawing the textures then you should only upload and share those to prevent Nintendo coming down with DMCA strikes, we are already threading the needle with texture packs. Hand drawn textures can be gathered under the Fair Use Policy doctrine(https://www.legalzoom.com/articles/what-...yright-law)

Hand drawn textures can be gathered under the Fair Use Policy doctrine(https://www.legalzoom.com/articles/what-...yright-law) Fair use applies to works that are transformative. Constricting the definition to manual reinterpretations through svg or bitmap drawing is too restrictive. I think, as do admins on this forum that using waifu2x on it's own is transformative enough. I think there is a fine line and waif2x is close to that line but not close enough to be labeled derivative. Of course anyone who gets an NVIDIA gpu, waifu2x caffe, and the cuDNN library can do it but it's not like this is a magic, perfect 1:1 upscaling filter. Think of the waifu2x process like you would a batch process in photoshop. Just because I didn't create the process doesn't mean it isn't transformative. I've also used the "Trace Image" function of Illustrator and "Trace Bitmap" function of Inkscape on packs, which I think can work quite well for games with simple geometry. I used these functions and a combo of waifu2x+trace bitmap for my Kirby Air Ride pack. I think all of these processes are sufficiently transformative, but I'm no expert on copyright law. I've seen a lot of talk about Nintendo and DMCA strikes and what not but I just don't see that happening ever. Nintendo has no reason to dedicate legal resources towards taking texture packs down. If anything Nintendo should be paying the Dolphin devs for helping maintain brand loyalty through the Wii U era and should just make an official Switch emulator for the high-end PC gamer market and encourage texture packing. Instead Nintendo is like the Apple of console companies in an era where Microsoft is selling Windows+Xbox One games. Anyways, the sales of the 3DS Luigi's Mansion remake will be affected by 0.0% from my waifu2x painting pack. Nintendo only comes down on people making money from stealing their ip for some shitty flash or iOS game or anything else that actually hurts their brand or threatens some amount of revenue. 03-10-2018, 07:48 PM
This is all just speculation, and you are probably correct that Nintendo doesn't care about texture packs. But I have had my packs taken down multiple times by the ESA who isn't Nintendo but represents Nintendo. I don't think they were targeting my texture packs (or any packs) specifically. They probably search for any files or archives that contain "Mario" or "Zelda", come across something that looks like it could be game files, so they take it down without really knowing or caring what it was they had taken down. Only a court case can decide whether or not waifu2x is transformative enough or not, but I highly doubt that any big company is going to take someone to court over texture packs for decade + old games to find out.
Asset flipping on the other hand is a real thing that people do, and people have been sued for it. But again, doubtful that anyone really cares about it when it comes to texture packs. Unless you're being stupid with it, like dumping the Wii-U Wind Waker textures and redistributing them for use in Dolphin while the game is still being sold. I don't think Nintendo would like that very much. In almost every case, it always starts with a DMCA notice before any legal action is taken. I reckon few have went beyond that point. And so far I have never heard of any texture packs that have had a cease and desist directed at them, regardless of what those packs contain.
