Oh, I see. Tongue

Then I don't know... Huh

I managed to solve this problem myself, actually. It turns out that the images used in the SMG texture pack are entirely too big. I was able to resize them, and I no longer experience those annoying stutters. I honestly don't notice much of a difference in texture quality either. For me to even notice, I have to be sitting right in front of my monitor and actively try to find problems with the textures. But if I'm playing on my TV, it looks the same as the original size of the HD pack and performs noticeably better.

Here's what I did (and this is applicable to anyone having trouble with this thread's Paper Mario pack or any others for that matter, so I hope I'm not derailing this thread too badly):
  • Download the .png pack. Use Multiple Image Resizer (MIR) to cut down the size of the images by 50% (or less, experiment with this if you want).
  • Copy the newly resized directory (default location is C:\MIR) to a folder with this tool. You must first use option 3 to repair the textures.
  • Once complete, copy the textures from the 2 new directories you should see, and overwrite the old ones.
  • Next, use option 6 to convert every texture to DDS format. I highly recommend you select "Highest Quality" and "Major" when prompted. The conversion will take ~10 minutes to complete.
  • You'll now have a DDS pack that looks pretty much the same (in 1080p at least) and is significantly smaller than the original (1+GB vs 360MB). You shouldn't need to use the prefeching build either. I didn't need to anyway, and I didn't have to use a RAM disk for this smaller .dds pack either - it just works.
So there you have it. Hopefully it solved the stuttering issue for you as well. Interesting enough, even if I used the smaller, resized, 400MB PNG pack on a RAM disk, the stuttering issue still occurred. But the 50% smaller .dds pack worked just fine. Proof that .dds textures are far superior! I wish I could say the same for the original 1+GB .dds pack though. The textures were just too big I suppose, even while in that format (or one could argue they weren't converted correctly, who knows).

Let me know if you get it working.

Thanks! I actually did that already some time ago Smile

I just thought with the prefetching it wouldn't be necessary to do all that. It's not that I have an issue with the quality loss, it's just so much hassle every time a texture pack gets updated Tongue

I guess the textures are so big that they exceed the bandwidth of the gfx card...

So, is it safe to assume that from now on a dedicated DDS pack will be released? If so, I will start working on helping out again.

Hm, I tried all this with the SMG pack and most textures aren't working afterwards. Actually, it's already after resizing them by 50% (and making sure they're saved as PNGs). O_o

As ExtremeDude2 said, this shouldn't happen in the latest versions. But, it does happen in the latest versions if you use savestates just before/during this point, such as loading a state during the battle with Lord Crump.
