I've seen other posts about this but can't find anything conclusive.

I'm trying to play Paper Mario: TTYD on Android but am getting frequent crashes. It runs fine when it's working, but will suddenly crash unexpectedly every 15 min or so. OpenGL crashes more frequently than Vulkan, but on Vulkan, if I bring up the Dolphin menu (or do anything outside of the game), the entire emulator crashes. I have read about the bounding box hack, but this thread mentions that issue was fixed over a year ago.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm running version 5.0-11617 on a Galaxy S10, Snapdragon 855.

It doesn't work without Vulkan because OpenGL isn't managing the paper effects. But Vulkan crashes the game whenever you minimise the app or use a savestate.

Any updates on fixing the Paper effects? I'm also having the same issue though already on chapter 8, much more convenient to save state during the Pit of 100 trials on OpenGL

Unfortunately there's nothing to fix in Dolphin. If your GPU drivers are buggy (extremely common on Android), Bounding Box emulation will be outright broken or very unstable, Paper Mario games makes extensive use of Bounding Box for its paper effects so as results it'll be very unstable depending of the device. Only the device manufacturer can issue firmware updates with less buggy GPU drivers, that is the fix...
