Paper Mario TTYD Crashing

Loaded up Paper Mario Thousand Year Door for the first time. It gets through the first cutscene, where the letter and map are delivered just fine. As soon as the boat in the next cutscene crosses the ocean (presumably to then turn around) the screen goes white and it crashes. The only thing I could find was a thread from 2014, and the fix in that thread did not work for me.
